Job description

ABOUT Slate

At Slate, we're building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love-and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.

Who we are looking for :

We are looking for a skilled Manufacturing Quality Engineer with expertise in software and electrical engineering to ensure delivery of high-quality software and embedded systems. The ideal candidate excels in software testing, continuous improvement, and cross-functional teamwork. This role requires strong knowledge of embedded systems, CAN-FD, and LIN protocols to support software quality assurance in electric truck production. You will manage quality assurance, work with global teams, and ensure high standards are met. This fast-paced role requires embedded systems expertise, manufacturing execution, and continuous improvement, focusing on software flashing, End-of-Line (EoL) testing, defect triage, and maintaining traceability of changes in calibration, software versions, and hardware parts.

What you get to do :

End-of-Line (EoL) Testing & Software Flashing

  • Support implementation of procedures for end-of-line (EoL) testing of ECUs and embedded devices across the EV truck platform.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineering and test development teams to ensure all software flashes and calibrations are successfully programmed and verified during EoL operations.
  • Track and verify software flash events in process, confirm build status (firmware, calibration level), and ensure recordkeeping aligns with current part specifications and configuration baselines.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot EoL test failures to determine root cause (software vs. hardware) and coordinate immediate containment and corrective actions.
  • Support the planning and evaluation of product test drives within quality and approvals of functions and systems.

Test Results Tracking & Traceability

  • Able to retrieve from MES records of tracking all EoL test results, flash data, and build configurations. Include linkage to vehicle VINs, ECU serial numbers, software part numbers, and calibrations.
  • Establish and monitor quality metrics and KPIs for software flash success rates, EoL test stability, retest rates, and issue reoccurrence.
  • Use data to identify trends and lead problem-solving investigations using root cause analysis tools (8D, Fishbone, etc.).
  • Quality Documentation & Clean Point Control

  • Ensure that software bugs, hardware issues, and calibration discrepancies are systematically documented, thoroughly investigated, and managed through established clean point procedures.
  • Maintain comprehensive quality records encompassing requirements, standards, changes, and resolutions, ensuring transparency for production, design engineering, and quality management teams.
  • Establish traceability among issue logs, root cause analyses, corrective actions, and clean point verifications, with particular attention during software and hardware implementations.
  • Develop and sustain Control Plans and Inspection Work Instructions.
  • Mitigate risk by utilizing appropriate risk assessment tools and verifying the effectiveness of detection and prevention systems, especially concerning special characteristics.
  • Contribute to the creation and ongoing improvement of core document
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide quality support to the technical and manufacturing teams, as well as drive / support daily operations.
  • Support the definition of quality processes and technical standards in cooperation with development, product management, and manufacturing to ensure product quality.
  • Continuous Improvement

  • Leverage insights from EoL test data and flash events to lead software quality improvement initiatives across production lines.
  • Recommend changes to test profiles, failure handling processes, and embedded software verification methods based on observational and analytics insights.
  • Document and share learnings for deployment in future production builds or pilot launches.
  • What you bring to the team :

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in automotive software quality, testing, or embedded systems within a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with CAN, CAN-FD, and LIN communication protocols and automotive diagnostic tools
  • Proven ability to execute or support software flash programming and testing on embedded ECUs
  • Experience with issue tracking systems, quality management tools, and production-level diagnostics.
  • Why Join Team Slate?

We're fueled by grit, determination, and attention to detail. Slate's start-up spirit of ingenuity and resourcefulness moves our business forward. Team Slate fosters a culture of excellence, innovation, and mutual respect, and is motivated by shared principles.
