Job Summary
The Chaska Police Department is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and highly motivated Deputy Police Chief to serve as a trusted second-in-command to the current Chief of Police. This critical leadership position will function as the department's operational lead, focused on driving day-to-day performance, reinforcing accountability and advancing the strategic vision of the Chief of Police.

Responsibilities
Oversees and directs day-to-day operations in alignment with organizational values and compliance with the law.
- Promote collaborative relationships and coordinate police functions in all areas of operation
- Recommends long-term department objectives
- Ensures department policies and procedures are followed by all personnel
- Provides guidance to division commanders in the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures to accomplish departmental goals and objectives
- Directs the development of departmental procedures and regulations to effectively accomplish goals and priorities of the department
- Seek opportunities to engage with other agencies to provide effective and efficient joint law enforcement services
Using independent judgment provides supervision and leadership to department personnel.
Makes recommendations relating to decisions on matters of discipline, adjusting grievances, or disciplining employeesCoordinate personnel issues related to performance matters. Makes recommendations related to personnel performance to the Chief of PoliceManages the hiring and promotion process and makes hiring recommendations to the Chief of PoliceEstablishes performance objectives, staff training, and developmentLeads the department management team in creating and maintaining a positive work environment and fostering effective performance of staff. Sets clear expectations and provides the police team with what they need to do their workAssigns and directs work of staff to create clarity so staff can perform at their bestEnsures ongoing feedback, coaching, mentoring, and timely formal reviews of performance for all personnelEncourages employee growth and development by providing or encouraging learning opportunitiesProvide leadership, counsel, and solicit staff collaboration to identify and solve issuesProvides administrative oversight of department budget.
Ensure police budget is within established guidelines and funds are spent in accordance with policyHelps develop detailed budgets by analyzing past expenditures, expected needs, and future cost projectionsReviews year-to-date spending reports during the budget cycle and identifies or recommends adjustments as necessaryReviews and provides insight on service contracts and purchasing bidsApproves expenditures related to department operations and trainingCommunicates courteously and professionally and maintains positive community and employee relations for the department and the City including exchanging information, receiving and responding to concerns and issues, while determining appropriate resolutions.
Represents the City to the community, other departments and agencies, and serves on various committeesCommunicate with others relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work-related needsPrepares reports, correspondence and other communications relating to departmental activities, direction, and accomplishmentsCoordinate communication strategies with Public Information Officers or take responsibility for communication when necessaryResponds as a leader in emergency situations.
Serves as the acting police chief when designated during absences of the Chief of Police
Actively participates in a command staff on-call rotation for after-hour response to critical incidents, significant personnel issues, or other emergencies.
Possesses knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, regulations and code related to law enforcement.
Recommends service delivery improvements based on trends and industry innovations.
Keeps well informed of criminal justice developments and best practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement, Police Administration, Public Administration or related field or ability to obtain a Bachelor's degree within 3 years of appointment.Eight years of progressively responsible police experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Licensure by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), or ability to obtain licensure by date of appointment.A valid driver's license.Desired Qualifications
