Under the direction of the Superintendent performs the following :
Coordinates operations with public utilities when required.
Assists with the installation, maintenance, repair and testing of all interior, overhead and underground copper and fiber optic cable used for fire, police, city, school fire alarm, telephone, data, security and communication systems.
Assists with the repairs, replaces, installs and tests all parts or components of various electrical, communications, telephone and signaling system, including fire coded boxes, transmitters and receivers, control panels, voice alarm circuit central office to all stations, cable terminations, console recording devices, coded tape recorder, bell circuits and central office.
Assists with installations, repairs, maintains and tests all city and school building fire protective signaling systems and associated equipment.
Assists with installations, repairs maintains, programs the city PABX telephone and voicemail system including all copper and fiber optic cable connections, terminations and telephone instruments associated with the system.
Assists with installations, repairs, maintains and tests various city and school security, access control and closed circuit television systems including all copper and fiber optic cable connections associated with the systems.
Assists with installations, repairs, maintains and tests various city and school intercom, public address-emergency, communication and specialty electronic systems including all copper and fiber optic cable connections associated with the systems.
Assists with installations, repairs and maintenance of the Fire Department Radio System Including all mobile, and portable radios and back bone system transmitters, receivers and repeaters.
Assists with installations, repairs and maintenance of the Fire Department vehicle warning lights and sirens.
Assists with repairs or replacement of component parts of signal system at repair center.
Assists with testing, maintenance and repairs all emergency generators for the Fire Department, Police Department and Public Schools.
Assists with the testing, maintenance, and repairs all emergency stand-by power supplies related to telephone, emergency signaling and communication equipment.
Assists with the maintenance of seven mutual aid circuits to surrounding cities and towns.
Assists with changes of suspension, pole transfers for outside cable plant construction for fire, police, city and school fire alarm and communication cables.
Makes recommendations to the Superintendent for the inventory of necessary materials and supplies needed for the Wire Division to carry out the above responsibilities or other duties as may be set by Superintendent and Chief of Department.
Perform all of the duties of Signal Maintainer as necessary including non-business hours callbacks.
Performs other duties during normal and emergency situations as directed by the Superintendent and Chief of Department.
REQUIREMENTS :
Must possess a valid Massachusetts Journeyman’s Electricians License. Must be knowledgeable in overhead, underground and internal electrical systems, fire alarm systems, and communication systems. Must be able to supervise the testing and troubleshoot circuitry, systems and their component parts. Must be able to use and make determinations from meters and other diagnostic equipment. Must have knowledge with Massachusetts and National Electric Codes, National Fire Alarm Code and other relative laws, regulations and standards, etc and their proper application.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in manholes, in aerial bucket trucks, to install, maintain and repair communication cables, on utility poles, shared with high voltage wires and wires of other utilities; and on ladders in buildings to reach fire alarm system, telephone, security and other communication and signaling system as listed above. Working with a second person, must be able to lift and move batteries, cable wire, fire box holders, Works some nights, weekends and is on call by schedule on Saturday and Sunday weeknights and holidays.
