Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 : 1 during the day and 5-6 : 1 at night. Common patient diagnoses include general medicine patients with various conditions. Nurses are required to titrate drips, specifically Heparin. There is 24-hour Charge RN coverage, and the Charge RN may take a patient assignment at times. A house supervisor is also present 24 / 7. Two Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are assigned per shift, with a ratio of 9 : 1 when the unit is full. Patients may have oxygen requirements up to 6L via nasal cannula and stable BiPAP / CPAP use at night or as needed. The telemetry department monitors patients remotely; unit equipment is primarily Phillips. Unit clerks provide 24-hour coverage. Nurses collaborate with unit leadership for additional scheduling preferences. Registered Nurses work every other weekend and participate in holiday rotations per policy. Traveling RNs are the first to float to other units as needed. Staff are required to provide their own scrubs in any color, except for pediatric scrubs. There is typically one 12-hour shift in orientation for traveling RNs with a unit preceptor. In-house services include hospitalists / intensivists, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy, available 24 / 7. Nurses are expected to attempt IV starts and utilize unit resources if unsuccessful. An inpatient phlebotomy team handles blood draws.
