Position Summary

The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) plays a key role in delivering advanced clinical care to children and adolescents with complex medical, neurodevelopmental, and behavioral needs. Working both independently and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the PNP performs comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, interventions, and ongoing management of acute and chronic conditions within the inpatient setting. This position ensures continuity of care, promotes patient and family education, and supports the overall clinical mission of Nexus Children’s Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Assessment

  • Provide care consistent with the Nursing Practice Act and facility standards.
  • Conduct detailed histories and physical exams for assigned pediatric patients.
  • Assess and manage acute and chronic medical concerns.
  • Perform emergency, life-saving procedures as needed.
  • Complete full physical and neurological assessments using interviews, diagnostic tests, and medical evaluations.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies; initiate appropriate interventions.

Treatment, Documentation & Collaboration

  • Prescribe and administer medications according to Texas APRN regulations and facility guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and timely progress notes, treatment documentation, and required medical records.
  • Collaborate with attending physicians, specialists, and community providers to coordinate patient care.
  • Ensure continuity of care between physician visits and across disciplines.
  • Discuss clinical cases with physicians, nurses, and other team members to optimize outcomes.
  • Patient & Family Support

  • Refer families to appropriate internal and external resources.
  • Participate in admissions meetings and weekly interdisciplinary treatment team conferences.
  • Provide health education, counseling, and ongoing support to patients and their families.
  • Professional Development & Staff Support

  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing and direct-care staff.
  • Participate in in-services, continuing education, workshops, and training programs.
  • Provide rotating 24-hour medical call coverage as assigned.
  • Assist in coaching staff on behavioral and de-escalation strategies as required.
  • Qualifications

    Education

  • Master’s degree in Nursing with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program OR
  • Master’s in Nursing with post-master’s Nurse Practitioner certification.
  • Experience

  • Preferred 3–5 years of experience in pediatric long-term rehabilitation, neurobehavioral care, or similar settings.
  • Licensure & Certifications

  • Current Texas RN license.
  • Current Texas Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN-NP) licensure.
  • Current BLS certification (must remain active throughout employment).
  • Completion of behavioral management and de-escalation training as required (e.g., SAMA, ABA, PIP).
