We care for people in our community because we are the community. Our medical / surgical unit includes 26 beds, with 22 beds designated for medical / surgical care and 4 beds for critical care. We care for both basic medical patients and those who progress to critical care. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 4-5 : 1 for medical / surgical and 1 : 2 for critical care. Our department allows nurses to exercise and develop a wide range of technical and interpersonal skills. Clinical skills include vital sign monitoring, patient assessment, medication administration, catheter management, peripheral IV insertion / maintenance, wound care, and laboratory specimen collection. We care for patients ranging from several weeks old to centenarians.
