Description :
The perfusionist must be knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions.
They are responsible, in consultation with the physician, for selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used.
The perfusionist may be administratively responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment and assuring periodic maintenance.
Management duties may include development and implementation of policies and procedures, quality assurance measures, and staff development.
The perfusionist must be able to operate extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary / circulatory function.
They ensure the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables.
Must demonstrate knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.
The duties of the perfusionist include functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system.
These duties include, but are not limited to, the safe performance and / or management of extracorporeal circulation and cardiopulmonary support.
This also includes counter pulsation, circulatory support, ventricular assistance, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Blood conservation techniques and autotransfusion through sequestering of autologous blood products are also part of the responsibilities.
Myocardial preservation, anticoagulation, and hematologic monitoring / analysis are critical tasks.
Physiological monitoring and analysis along with blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring / analysis are required.
Induction of hypothermia / hyperthermia with reversal, hemodilution, and administration of medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit are part of the job.
Documentation associated with described duties is essential.
Preparing platelet gel or fibrin glue, isolated limb / organ perfusion, and electrophysiological analysis are required functions.
Surgical assistance is expected along with demonstrating knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Assisting the supervising physician with consults for purposes of gathering information and formulating an action plan is part of the role, but producing dictated or written consults is not permitted.
Performing perfusionist duties for scheduled cardiovascular cases as well as being on standby when needed and available for call is required.
Balloon pump monitoring and setup, as well as long-term support operation and setup, are included in the responsibilities.
Preparing electronic spreadsheets for billing purposes and performing other tasks as assigned are part of the job.
The perfusionist is responsible for inserting intravenous and intra-arterial catheters, cardioplegia, and / or defibrillation when indicated under supervision.
They must maintain the patient to and from the operating room.
The cleaning and maintenance of all cardiac perfusion equipment is necessary.
Maintaining sufficient inventory of cardiac perfusion supplies for the volume of procedures is expected.
Shared knowledge and skills as appropriate with others on a formal and informal basis are encouraged.
Adherence to established policies, procedures, precautions, and documentation required to ensure compliance with standards of care is essential.
