The facility has 241 licensed beds and is a Level 3 Trauma center. The unit has 32 beds. The patient population includes individuals who do not require mechanical ventilation. Common diagnoses may include Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Dysrhythmia, Chest Pain workup, Stroke, Abdominal illnesses, Respiratory illness, Diabetes, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) / Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and Alcohol withdrawal. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 : 4, but it may be adjusted to 1 : 5 based on patient acuity. Support within the department includes a charge nurse, nursing assistance for activities of daily living, phlebotomy support, and a respiratory team available 24 / 7. There is continuous availability of hospitalists and intensivists. Telemetry monitoring is conducted both at the bedside and from the nurses' station. Technology used includes an electronic medical record system, IV pumps, medication dispensing systems, and cardiac monitors. Floating may be required within the region and scope of practice. The unit culture is family-oriented. Travelers will have some weekend rotation responsibilities and are expected to work a percentage of holidays. Requests for time off can be approved up to six days, excluding holidays.
