Job Description

Under general supervision, the Machine Operator I fulfills a number of different operator rolls. These roles and duties include :

  • QC Strip Inspector is responsible for monitoring the condition of finished painted product before it reaches the exit end of the paint line. This includes continuously monitoring both top and bottom sides, reporting suspected defects to the Quality Control Technician and instructing coater operator to cease painting if gross defects are observed.
  • Wet Section operator is responsible for operating the wet section equipment in accordance with wet section operating parameters. This includes monitoring temperatures, pressures, chemical concentrations via titration, operating the chemical pretreatment coater machine, exchanging chemical totes using a forklift and performing coating weight checks on steel strip samples.
  • Emboss Line operator is responsible for processing quality hold coils to resolve potential defects issues, using the emboss cassette to emboss finished goods coils, preparing finished goods coils for packaging, operating an overhead crane, driving a forklift, entering coil data into Oracle and producing coil identification tags. Operate a leveler unit.
  • Coater Assistant is responsible for supporting the Finish Coater operators in efficiently and safely operating the coating equipment and maintaining the finish coater rooms. Duties include cleaning painting equipment, moving paint drums in and out of the coater room, assisting with roll changes, measuring and documenting paint usage information, monitoring the coater whilst the operator is not present. Knowledge of forward / direct coating and reverse coating, and what situation each technique would be used.
  • Prime Coater Operator is responsible for operating the Prime Coater machine. Duties include setting up the Coater, measuring painting parameters (wet film thickness, viscosity, temperature, roll speeds), adjusting the Coater following direction from QC Lab Tech, performing roll changes, cleaning painting equipment, moving paint drums in and out of the coater room, measuring and documenting paint usage information, entering data into Oracle.
  • Communicates daily with employees from Maintenance, Operations and Quality Control to help resolve any problems and help achieve company goals.

Education & Experience Qualifications

Minimum :

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • One year of Manufacturing Experience
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Preferred :

  • 6+ months of experience operating mobile equipment in a manufacturing environment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Time Management - prioritizing work to meet internal and / or external customer demands
  • Detail Oriented - ensures accuracy of product and documentation to meet internal and / or external customer demands
  • Good communication skills
  • Mobile equipment operations skills
  • May operate high-cost equipment using cutting edge-technology; may operate equipment with safety hazards (e.g., sharp edges, heat, etc.)

  • Safety equipment or protective gear is required as necessary (e.g., insulated gloves, protective eye wear, hearing protection, safety belts, hard hat, fall restraint, arm guards, weld hood, safety shoes)
  • Will be required to utilize various hand-held tools and equipment (e.g., hammers, welders, saws, drill, drill press, cutting torches, hand trucks, etc.)
  • May work with industrial products and chemicals and be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fumes, and / or airborne particles
  • May be exposed to lethal stored energy sources including mechanical and up to 100 volts of electrical current
  • Ability to distinguish sounds is required for safety purposes. Being hearing impaired may be life threatening in the environment.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and / or move equipment / supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
  • May be required to stand or walk up to 80 percent of the time, including long durations of standing or walking up to 8 to 10 hours daily
  • Some work may be repetitive, which may include repetitive physical motion
  • Use of hands and fingers required to pinch, pick, and feel objects, tools and / or controls
  • Work requires continuous mental attention and high alertness
  • Work requires physical activities such as bending, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, etc., which may include the use of a step stool or ladder.
  • May be exposed to adverse or hazardous conditions including, but not limited to, high-speed machinery and production equipment, work at heights, and / or near dust, fumes and gases
  • May be exposed to excessive or loud noise where hearing protection is required
  • Work takes place in extreme hot or cold temperatures
  • Good close vision required for viewing paper copies and / or computer screens
  • Required to distinguish colors on monitoring equipment, paper copy, computer screen, or for safety purposes where vision impairment may be life threatening
  • May be required to work outside of normally scheduled hours as mandated by the client, project, and / or workload including overtime with minimal notification (e.g., evenings, weekends, and / or holidays).
  • Scheduled work hours, including rotating shifts, may vary to support a 24x7 operation (e.g., early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, etc.)
  • Activities performed less frequently may nevertheless be essential functions.
