We are seeking an experienced State and Local Income Tax Managing Director to join our Lead Tax Services group. The Managing Director will lead the growth and strategic direction of Crowe's California State and Local Tax (SALT) practice, with a primary focus on market expansion, business development, and client excellence. This individual will play a key leadership role in shaping the firm's presence in the Western region, driving revenue growth, and developing a high-performing team that delivers exceptional client service and technical expertise. The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise in California state income tax, strong leadership skills, and a proven ability to build trusted client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the California and broader West Region SALT practice develop and execute a go-to-market strategy that drives new revenue streams, expands client engagements, and elevates the firm's brand in the West.
  • Serve as the primary client engagement partner for engagements in state and local income tax manage complex consulting and compliance engagements for high-value clients, providing strategic and technical leadership.
  • Leverage and expand your external network to drive business development identify and pursue new client opportunities, lead sales efforts, develop cross-collaboration with other service lines, and actively participate in industry forums.
  • Act as a thought leader in SALT represent Crowe externally by publishing articles, speaking at industry events, and contributing innovative solutions in state and local tax issues, particularly in California.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team manage directors, senior managers and staff; create and execute talent development plans; foster a culture aligned with Crowe values of Care, Trust, Courage, and Stewardship.
  • Oversee transformation and continuous improvement of the SALT practice champion the adoption of technology, process enhancements, and best practices to deliver efficient and scalable solutions.
  • Collaborate with national and regional practice leadership ensure alignment of strategy, share resources, participate in firm-wide initiatives, and contribute to the overall growth of the tax services practice.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required; Master's in Taxation or JD / LLM a plus.

CPA or JD / LLM required.

Minimum 10-15 years of tax experience in public accounting, with a strong focus on state and local income tax.

Proven business development and revenue growth track record demonstrated success in generating new clients, expanding existing client relationships, and meeting or exceeding financial targets.

Deep technical expertise in state and local income tax issues including but not limited to state income / franchise tax, nexus, multistate apportionment, combined / unitary filings, legislative developments in California and other Western states.

Strong leadership experience managing large teams, developing talent, coaching managers and staff, and driving engagement profitability.

Excellent communication, relationship management, presentation and negotiation skills able to influence C-suite clients and internal stakeholders.

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Crowe, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $155,500.00 - $416,000.00 per year.
