Job description

Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO)

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV / AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world's deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

Fred Hutch Cancer Center is seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) to lead and oversee the integration of information technology into the clinical and medical domains. Reporting directly to the CIO with a dotted line to the CMO, the CMIO will work at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and clinical operations to drive the adoption and effective use of health IT solutions that improve patient care, enhance clinical workflows, and support the research mission of Fred Hutch.

The CMIO will collaborate with clinicians, researchers, IT teams, and administrative leaders to define, implement, and optimize technology strategies that enable innovation and enhance the quality, efficiency, and safety of care delivery. This role is crucial in ensuring that the clinical and research teams have the tools they need to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing medical research and improving operational effectiveness.

Responsibilities

Clinical Informatics Strategy and Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of the strategic vision for medical informatics, ensuring alignment with Fred Hutch's overall clinical, research, and organizational goals.
  • Advocate for the use of health IT solutions to support clinical and research workflows, improve patient care, and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Guide the digital transformation of clinical and research environments, ensuring that the clinical informatics strategy is forward-looking and leverages emerging technologies.

Collaboration with Clinical and Research Leadership

  • Work closely with clinical leaders, medical staff, and research teams to ensure that clinical informatics initiatives are aligned with the needs of providers and researchers.
  • Act as a liaison between IT and clinical departments, translating clinical requirements into technology solutions and helping the IT department understand the operational challenges clinicians face.
  • Foster strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the organization to promote collaboration and the adoption of new digital tools and systems.
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems and Health IT Solutions

  • Oversee the implementation, optimization, and ongoing management of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other critical clinical systems to ensure they meet the needs of healthcare providers, patients, and researchers.
  • Ensure that EHR and other clinical systems are used effectively to support decision-making, clinical workflows, and patient outcomes, including improving interoperability between various systems.
  • Lead efforts to improve the usability and functionality of clinical IT systems, ensuring they enhance rather than disrupt clinical operations.
  • Clinical Decision Support (CDS) and Data Analytics

  • Lead the development and optimization of clinical decision support tools and other data-driven applications to improve patient care, reduce clinical errors, and enhance efficiency.
  • Work with data scientists and analytics teams to leverage health data for clinical insights, predictive analytics, and evidence-based practices that enhance patient care.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Data Security

  • Ensure all clinical IT systems are compliant with regulatory standards, such as HIPAA, FDA regulations, and other healthcare compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT security teams to ensure the privacy and security of patient data, as well as to address data governance and risk management concerns within clinical systems.
  • Oversee the development and enforcement of policies and practices to ensure clinical data is used ethically and in compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Change Management and Training

  • Lead efforts to promote the adoption of new technologies and clinical informatics systems across the organization, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption to clinical workflows.
  • Develop and implement training programs for clinicians and staff to enhance their proficiency with clinical IT systems, including EHRs, clinical decision support tools, and other technologies.
  • Provide leadership in managing resistance to change, ensuring that staff understand the benefits of clinical informatics solutions and are equipped to use them effectively.
  • Innovation and Technology Integration

  • Explore and evaluate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), telemedicine, and other innovations, to drive improvements in patient care, clinical workflows, and research.
  • Lead the integration of new technologies into clinical and research practices to foster innovation and enhance the delivery of care.
  • Work with the research community to identify opportunities for using informatics solutions to support translational research and personalized medicine.
  • Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead and manage a team of clinical informatics professionals, including physicians, informaticists, and analysts, to ensure the effective development, implementation, and support of clinical IT initiatives.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for the clinical informatics team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Ensure that the team is aligned with the organization's goals and that they are equipped to handle the complex needs of Fred Hutch's clinical and research environments.
  • Budget and Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the budget for clinical informatics projects, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with Fred Hutch's strategic priorities.
  • Oversee resource allocation for clinical IT initiatives, ensuring that projects are adequately staffed and that budget constraints are adhered to.
  • Monitor the performance of clinical informatics projects to ensure they meet timelines, goals, and budget constraints.
