Job Summary
The Division of Substation & Meter at Hawaiian Electric Company has a management vacancy available for a Professional level role. The position is available at either the Substation Service Engineer or Senior Substation Service Engineer level, whichever best matches the applicant’s qualifications.
Responsibilities – Substation Service Engineer
- Provides engineering support to the department for the construction and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems. Must be available for emergency calls at all times.
- Conducts investigations, working with field personnel and equipment manufacturers to resolve equipment problems; ensures proper resolution with engineering and vendors. Participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Assures the proper integration of new equipment, including electrical acceptance testing, training, spare parts, test equipment, safety, and maintenance procedures.
- Prepares and submits studies and engineering requests to resolve problem areas identified through maintenance and test reports; ensures implementation of recommended actions.
- Establishes maintenance documentation for preventative maintenance programs and updates procedures for new or upgraded equipment with emphasis on safety.
- Develops tool and test equipment requirements, including capital budget requests and cost justification; recommends new methods to accomplish division mission.
- Implements environmental assignments such as PCB and SF6 tracking, special test equipment procedures, and special project implementation.
- Assists the Superintendent with administrative duties such as budgets, meetings, updates, reports, and training development; substitutes for Superintendent as needed.
- Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Responsibilities – Senior Substation Service Engineer
Supervises and directs all Substation Service Engineer and Substation Predictive Maintenance activities, including inspections, testing, troubleshooting, data collection, and analysis.Manages, directs, and develops activities for the Substation Service Engineer I & II, Field Technologist, and Substation Predictive Maintenance Specialist.Serves on committees in a leadership capacity, working with other departments on system changes, IMT, risk management, ERP enhancements, smart grid technology, asset management, reliability strategies, and renewable energy initiatives.Leads and consults with manufacturers, engineering, operations, project management, and contractors to ascertain proper equipment design, planning, scheduling, troubleshooting, operational performance, and emergency response.Assists the Superintendent with administrative duties such as budgets, meetings, updates, reports, and training; substitutes for Superintendent as needed.Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.Qualifications – Knowledge Requirements
Thorough working knowledge of electrical / electronic engineering fundamentals, normally acquired through college level courses at an accredited college or equivalent experience. A BSEE will nominally fulfill this requirement.Professional Engineer license strongly desirable.Working knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheet, and word processing software.Understanding of operation and maintenance principles for substation equipment in an electric utility environment.Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.Working knowledge of SafeStart principles.For Senior role : Working knowledge of predictive maintenance tools (Partial Discharge, Infrared Thermography, Oil Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Ultrasonic Monitoring).For Senior role : Working knowledge of safety principles.Qualifications – Skills Requirements
Excellent oral, written, and listening skills.Strong interpersonal skills to influence various groups or individuals.Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.Ability to read, interpret, and explain complex instructions relating to equipment operation, testing, and maintenance.Analytical, computational, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle various projects and programs.Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.Qualifications – Experience Requirements
5–7 years of experience for Substation Service Engineer; 7–10 years for Senior Substation Service Engineer in operation and maintenance of electrical / electronic systems in an electric utility environment.Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License highly desired to stamp drawings for construction and building permits.Salary
The hiring range for the Substation Service Engineer is $78,000 to $99,600. The hiring range for the Senior Substation Service Engineer is $97,900 to $125,000.
