Primary Duties and

Responsibilities :

This position exists to patrol the campus, protect property, and respond to emergency situations and requests for assistance. This position is eligible to receive a shift differential.

  • Maintain a positive and courteous demeanor at all times; practice open dialogue and understanding, and communicate with others in an honest, professional, and respectful manner.
  • Interact, provide and exchange information with students, employees and guests; develops a rapport with members of the university community and surrounding areas; participate in community relations activities.
  • Demonstrate a high level of awareness, good judgment, and critical thinking skills in all aspects of the position.
  • Conduct pro-active, high visibility patrol to prevent theft, vandalism, or other criminal offenses and to identify opportunities to engage and provide service to the campus community and visitors. Observe for and investigate unusual or suspicious circumstances, inappropriate use of University facilities or property. Remain attentive for, report, and follow up on potential security concerns and hazards such as lighting, access control, alarm systems, fire safety, and other concerns that may affect the safety or effective operation of the University. Enforce parking regulations on campus by ticketing, immobilizing, and towing as appropriate.
  • Perform general security duties including escorts, jump starts, vehicle accesses, response to fire / duress / burglar alarms, medical / psychological emergencies, and calls for service; building checks, accesses, lock ups, and preliminary investigation of incidents occurring on campus. May provide direction to contract security such as CSC and Apex at special events. May respond to and assist with traffic accidents on or in close proximity to campus until the arrival of proper authorities. May respond to provide assistance and service to members of the BU community in proximity to campus as needed.
  • Act as first responder to incidents and emergencies. Maintains a working knowledge of the University’s Emergency Management Plan; establishes command and implements ICS on any significant crime, emergency, or other serious incident, in accordance with NIMS / ICS training and the Belmont emergency management plan. May perform first aid and assist police, fire, EMS, and other responders. Acts as liaison with local law enforcement agencies. Participates in debriefs and critiques to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all needed notifications have been made in timely fashion, that accurate information has been communicated, and that information has been properly documented via incidents via incident reports, maintenance requests, field interview cards, jump start forms, vehicle assistance forms, affidavits of complaint, and student misconduct forms.
  • May assist with orienting new hires to duties and responsibilities. May present on security-related topics for the campus community as well as presenting in-service training for officers.

  • Additional requirements include self-restraint in challenging situations, excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate observations and explain actions, and to write clear and concise reports, as well as make presentations to campus groups; good listening skills; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of the university community; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people and act calmly and rationally in an emergency; ability to work with minimal supervision, handle multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality; ability to operate computer equipment and a two-way radio.
  • Required Education

  • High school diploma or equivalency plus a minimum of three years’ experience demonstrating reliability and accountability, good judgment, good customer service skills, discretion, decision-making and problem-solving abilities, teamwork and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Associates Degree in criminal justice, business or law enforcement; related experience in an institution of higher education; First Aid and CPR certification; demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Required Experience

    Must be able to be certified as an Unarmed Security Guard by the state of Tennessee. Requirements found at : /

  • Be at least 18 years of age for registration as an unarmed security guard
  • Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien
  • Be legally mentally competent, be of good moral character
  • Be free of habitual drunkenness or narcotics addiction or dependence
  • Have no disability which would prevent performance of duties
  • Be free of convictions including :
  • Probation for 5 years for serious crimes OR Crimes involving : FirearmsShopliftingViolence
  • Must meet the state regulated training requirements
  • Submit three fingerprint cards for processing for a TBI and or FBI criminal history check
  • The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check satisfactory to the University.
