Job Description

The Data Center Engineering Analytics and Modeling (DCEAM) organization is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to lead grid to rack electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations for AI data centers. You will develop detailed MV / LV power system models from the utility source through the IT load to analyze transient performance, harmonic distortion, protection, grounding, and UPS-generator interactions. These models will be used to ensure power quality, stability, and reliability across all operating modes. You will support projects from site selection and design through commissioning and integrated systems testing (IST), working closely with design, operations, vendor, and utility teams.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Develop & Maintain EMT Models : MV sources; transformers (saturation / inrush); grounding; cables; UPS / DRUPS; generators (AVR / governor); STS / ATS; Busway / PDU / RPP; filters / FACTS; VFD-driven HVAC.

Conduct Dynamic Performance and Transient Studies : Generator-UPS Compatibility; Large block load step (GPU ramp-up) response; Transformer inrush and load transfer; Generator start and transfer sequences; UPS input / output switching and bypass events; Black Start; Frequency Stability; Rotor-Angle Stability; Voltage Stability / Voltage Ride Through.

Conduct Power Quality Studies : Flicker / Voltage Step Analysis; Harmonic / Resonance scans and filter application; Inrush / Ferroresonance; Converter Limited Fault Behavior; Power Factor Correction.

Conduct Steady-State Analysis : Load flow / Voltage Drop; Short Circuit / Equipment Evaluation; Protection & Coordination; Arc Flash Hazard Analysis; Grounding Study

Support generator and UPS vendor coordination for paralleling, synchronization, and control system stability.

Generate FMU models for multi-domain simulations

Establish modeling standards, libraries, QA, version control; automate cases, sweeps, and reporting.

Review vendor black-box models; document assumptions and deliver clear, actionable reports.

Ensure compliance with internal security, data handling, and licensing policies for tools and models.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, controls, commissioning, etc.) to ensure electrical system stability under dynamic load profiles.

Author study reports and technical memos for design review and operational readiness.

Minimum Requirements

BS in Electrical Engineering (power systems or power electronics); 3-5+ years EMT studies.

Proficiency in one or more : PSCAD / EMTDC, EMTP-RV, PowerFactory (EMT), ATP-EMTP, Simulink / Simscape.

Experience modeling UPS / inverters and synchronous generators; transformer saturation / inrush.

Knowledge of protection basics, grounding, harmonics, converter controls (PLL, current / voltage loops).

Ability to interpret one-lines, settings, control block diagrams, and test data.

Scripting for automation / data analysis (Python, MATLAB, or similar).

Familiarity with standards : IEEE 519, IEEE 1453 / IEC 61000-4-15, IEC 61000 series, NEC / NFPA 70 or IEC 60364, IEEE C37.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD / MS in Power Systems / Power Electronics or equivalent experience.

Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility (Electrical, Power discipline)

Data center design / operations (UPS topologies, STS transfers, generator paralleling, coordination).

Familiarity with AI / GPU rack power modeling, DC bus design, and bipolar bus applications.

Real-time / HIL (RTDS, OPAL-RT / HYPERSIM, Typhoon HIL) and hybrid RMS-EMT workflows.

Advanced harmonic / resonance mitigation (active / tuned filters, STATCOM / SVC).

Protection engineering for converter-rich systems and low-fault-current scenarios.

Experience with Git-based model governance and reproducible reporting.

Understanding of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and lithium-ion UPS topologies.

Knowledge of Microgrid architectures, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER); including their control strategies, operational modes (grid-forming, grid-following, islanded, and parallel operation), and integration with critical data center electrical infrastructure.
