Job description

Lateral Police Officer (Detective)

The lateral police officer detective position is a commissioned peace officer assigned to the Investigations and Mitigation Division of the University of Texas Police Department.

Purpose

The lateral police officer detective will be responsible for conducting thorough investigations of criminal activity on and around the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate property crimes.
  • Investigate crimes against persons.
  • Collect, preserve, and analyze evidence.
  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate and complete case files.
  • Interview suspects and witnesses.
  • Collaborate with outside agencies.
  • Testify in court proceedings related to investigations.
  • Gather information and research situations to maintain situational awareness and assess risk.
  • May perform traditional law enforcement duties during special events. May include periods of on-call status.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicant must have attained an Advanced TCOLE certification and possess a current TCOLE peace officer license or have held the same with no more than 180 days break in service. Comparable licenses from other states may be considered.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and are eligible to drive a university owned or leased vehicle.
  • Must have relevant experience assigned as a full-time law enforcement investigator or related assignment for no less than 5 years at a law enforcement agency of comparable size or larger.
  • Able to provide credible court testimony and present to grand juries with demonstrated proficiency in doing the same.
  • Successfully complete a six-month probation period.
  • Pass a background investigation.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience assigned as a full time investigator or related assignment at a full service law enforcement agency.
  • Possess a TCOLE Master peace officer license.
  • Possess a TCOLE Instructor certification.
  • Have completed formal training and demonstrated successful practical application of techniques in interview / interrogation, investigative techniques, and development and execution of arrest and search warrants.
  • Experience in coordinating with district and county prosecutor's offices and coordinating investigations that involve multiple units or agencies.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills to include proficiency in common investigative platforms : Cloud Gavel, Techshare, etc.
  • Have supervisory experience in an investigative unit at a law enforcement agency.
  • Have working knowledge of open source investigations and threat assessment best practices.
  • Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Driving Required

    This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

    Salary Range

    $72,098.00 + depending on qualifications

  • Work Shift

  • Standard UT schedule, Monday - Friday 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM
  • May be required to work day or night hours, weekends and holidays with varying days off.
  • May perform traditional law enforcement duties during special events.
  • May include periods of on-call status.

    Employment Eligibility : Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility : The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

    Background Checks : A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.
