Description : The unit is a Medical Surgical and Orthopedic Trauma department. Required certifications include BLS, with ACLS preferred. Candidates must have a valid driver's license. Fingernail policy prohibits artificial nails in patient care areas. Refusal to comply may lead to termination of contract. Registered Nurses must pass a skills exam during orientation, achieving a minimum score of 90%. The unit has 55 beds with nurse-patient ratios of 1 : 5 to 1 : 6. Common diagnoses include joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, and sepsis among others. Registered Nurses are required to titrate certain drips, including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine. PCA pumps are also utilized on the unit. A charge nurse is present on each shift and retains an assignment. Patient care techs are available with a ratio of 1 : 10 to 1 : 20. Television technicians interpret strips; nurses should have some awareness of telemetry. Shifts operate from early morning to late evening. Travelers will be scheduled with some options for block scheduling. Weekend commitments include working every other weekend, with holiday requirements of 2 to 3 shifts from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Floating to other medical surgical areas is required when necessary. Scrub color for nurses is navy blue, and specific attire is not provided. The unit emphasizes hourly rounding and responsiveness. Successful nurses on this unit are team players, demonstrate good attendance, and prioritize patient care. Patients from diverse cultural backgrounds are cared for within this unit. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront, with limited approvals after initial submissions. The hospital may cancel shifts as needed during assignments. The charting system in use is EPIC.
