The Westbrook Police Department is seeking dedicated and professional Police Officers to serve as the vital first line of communication between the community and law enforcement. Key Responsibilities

Enforce federal, state, and municipal laws
Identify and apprehend offenders, participate in court proceedings
Conduct preventive patrols to reduce crime opportunities
Assist individuals in danger and manage public safety incidents
Facilitate safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic
Investigate and report potential law enforcement or governmental issues
Engage with community members to promote safety and trust
Maintain public peace and good order through a community-oriented policing philosophy
Complete all duties in accordance with legal and constitutional standards
Perform additional related duties as assigned

Education And Qualifications

Completion of a State of Maine approved pre-service police training course

Graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and / or Maine Police Officer certification

Relevant post-secondary education or prior law enforcement experience

Understanding of modern policing principles and practices

Ability to handle situations firmly, tactfully, and respectfully

Strong analytical skills and quick decision-making under stress

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Commitment to Law Enforcement Code of Ethics

Firearms proficiency and competent vehicle operation skills

Team player with strong cooperation skills

Special Requirements

Minimum age 21 (or 20 with associate degree or 60 college credits)

U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.

High school diploma or GED

Valid Maine driver's license with a clean driving record

Good physical condition meeting vision, hearing, and fitness standards

Police Officer certification from Maine Criminal Justice Academy within one year of hire

Ability to legally possess a firearm

Compensation And Benefits

Competitive salary range of $32.15 - $41.52 per hour depending on experience. Education, Military Experience, Physical Fitness, and Foreign Language Proficiency stipends available.

Hiring Incentive Bonus of $14,000 for BLETP Graduates with 5 years of experience and out-of-state lateral hires (no service requirement).

This position is covered by the Westbrook Police Association collective bargaining agreement.

A comprehensive benefits package includes medical (PPO plan with 12% premium cost, plus HRA reimbursement), dental, vision, life insurance (one times base salary), short and long-term disability, and employee assistance program.

Generous paid leave including vacation, sick, and 13 holidays per year.

Tuition reimbursement for job-related courses.

Retirement program of the Maine Public Employees Retirement Plan (Maine PERS) or defined 457 with matching up to 6%.
