Candidates must comply with the fingernail policy prohibiting artificial nails in patient care areas. Candidates must pass a skills exam during orientation with a score of 90% or higher. Description : The unit provides care for patients undergoing various orthopedic surgical procedures. Common procedures include total knee replacements, total hip replacements, ankle replacements, total shoulders, and spine surgeries. The average daily census is 6 patients with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 : 5-6. Charge nurses are present on each shift and typically maintain an assignment. Nurse aides or patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1 : 13 to assist nursing staff. There are telecommunication technicians to interpret monitoring strips; nurses are not required to read their own strips. Shifts are scheduled cyclically with self-scheduling options available. Weekend work is required every other week, and holiday shifts are rotated among permanent staff. Floating between related departments is required based on patient acuity.
