Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Necessary Special Qualification Requirements - Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Graduate of accredited Medical Assistants program.

Related experience; or an equivalent combination of education; or 5-Years of experience. Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care and techniques of practical nursing.

Knowledge of common health and safety precautions in working in local health departments.

Knowledge of dental clinic operations and protocols.

Work with staff and patients, under supervision, as set up by departmental policies.

Follow oral and written instructions.

Required License or Certification

Certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

Positions in this banded class perform basic patient care tasks, supportive counseling and a variety of treatments. Direct patient care duties include physical and personal care, assisting patients with activities of daily living, and performing routine treatments, under the close supervision of a Professional Nurse or Physician. Positions may also clean and maintain the patient care environment, perform routine clerical functions, and transport and move patients. Positions may obtain and record pertinent health information, maintain patient data and reports, and provide information to individuals and families.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Mission of the Student Health Center is to provide patient centered, holistic health care services to the students of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.

Our services are rendered in accordance with evidence-based practices and medical guidelines which help to improve the students' physical and mental well-being. Through our care, we aim to prevent or reduce student time lost from academic and extracurricular activities. Our educational programs aspire to engage our students and provide information and resources to enhance their lifestyles and reinforce behavior that will sustain them far beyond their matriculation through North Carolina A&T State University.

Our intent is to improve the quality of life for the North Carolina A&T State University community. The consummate goal of the Student Health Center is to maintain healthy students and a healthy student environment in which our students can achieve their educational goals.

Work Hours

10am - 7pm (Hours may vary); Monday - Friday

Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies.

On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and / or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site)

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Knowledge - Technical

Duties

  • Applies medical, clinical, administrative, and laboratory knowledge to support patient care.
  • Manages medical records, insurance processing, and collections.
  • Assists with exams, procedures, pharmacology, and lab testing.
  • Performs and documents diagnostic tests (hematocrits, urinalysis, blood glucose, pregnancy).
  • Recognizes and responds to emergencies; administers CPR / first aid and maintains emergency equipment.
  • Follows protocols for data collection, equipment operation, calibration, and quality control.
  • Maintains exam rooms and clinic supplies; monitors trends and reports needs.
  • Completes assigned tasks accurately and on time.

Duties

  • Administers immunizations and injections in the clinic.
  • Performs laboratory services and basic lab tests (e.g., hemoglobin, urinalysis, EKGs).
  • Confirms and clarifies written orders before performing delegated tasks.
  • Receives and assists patients in person and by phone; communicates patient needs to the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Maintains accurate patient records, including lab results, appointments, and diagnoses.
  • Processes new patient applications, obtains personal and medical history, determines eligibility, and schedules appointments.
  • Provides chairside assistance and prepares instruments and exam rooms for procedures.
  • Contacts patients regarding test results, interviews, and overdue appointments.
  • Escorts patients within the department as needed.
  • Supports physicians and nurses with clinical and laboratory functions, including equipment setup and standard procedures.
  • Interprets physician orders and diagnoses under supervision.
