Background

Within the group, the Investment & Asset Management team is responsible for the sourcing, onboarding, growth, and monetisation of innovative technologies and ventures. EIT InnoEnergy is looking for an Investment & Asset Manager for its  US Operation .

The Role

Today EIT InnoEnergy has one of the largest climate tech investment portfolios worldwide with more than 180 investee companies. We define ourselves as patient investors as we want opportunities that make impact at large, and this goes hand in hand with industrial development. In addition, 80% of our companies are exporting so we are looking for solutions that are highly scalable. Climate change and energy transition are global issues and therefore we need global solutions that can be implemented not only in the nearest markets, but also worldwide, hence we have ambitious plans to expand.

The main responsibility of the Investment & Asset Manager is to bring our existing portfolio companies to the US market and to support them in doing so. Secondly, to create a vivid portfolio capturing opportunities in the US region to bring its development to Europe. Specifically, this role involves to support the business development of our portfolio companies in the US, including supporting them in the commercial and funding strategies and sourcing of innovative cases for investment decision, the negotiation of investment terms, and the active management of investments following InnoEnergys innovation and investment strategy.

The nature of this role requires the incumbent to interact with multiple stakeholders :

  • Close cooperation with the US Management Team : CEO, and the Boston team of Business Development and Financial Managers.
  • The Investment and Innovation Management team at a global level, the Portfolio Management team, and the regional Investment Directors, located in Europe.
  • Managing a local team in the Boston Office, at working level with :
  • Start-ups, Scale-ups, SMEs, or innovative companies
  • Key players of Boston / US entrepreneurship within the sustainable energy ecosystem,
  • Key players of US energy ecosystem (e.g. utilities, etc.)
  • InnoEnergy partners,
  • Investors, financing institutions,
  • Service Providers, Consultancies, etc.

The Investment & Asset Manager is member of the US management team and member of the Investment and Innovation team on a central level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and negotiate the business development activities of our portfolio companies in the US market, creating an appealing proposal of added value services to make the business case : bigger, sooner, and safer (de-risking) and assure the monetization of those services in the investment contract.
  • Actively execute agreed business development activities (value added services) through internal and external resources to maximize the value creation in the portfolio companies.
  • Capture and develop new business opportunities for InnoEnergy in the climate tech sector : generating a deal flow and screening for innovative investment opportunities.
  • Participate in the negotiation of investment cases, in collaboration with the Thematic Field leader and Portfolio Manager.
  • Manage the equity evolution of each asset under his / her responsibility and report on a constantly basis to the corporate team.
  • Monetise the value of the portfolio, participating on the planning and execution of exits.
  • Increase the value of the portfolio by working closely with European sales team to capture opportunities for the investees.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with relevant partners from industry, founders, investors, financing institutions, consultancies, associations, etc.
  • Participate in InnoEnergys internal strategic projects.
  • Contribute to InnoEnergys business planning and reporting processes, collaboration in the preparation of investment committee documents.
  • Independent market and competition analysis of our portfolio companies.
  • Create and lead a team to ensure the professional development and growth of his / her direct team and excel in the objectives.
  • Participate and exchange activities / knowledge with the InnoEnergy corporate and other offices, participating and contributing to the different communities.
  • Enrich the IE ecosystem establishing strategic relationships with companies and / or other actors in the US region.
  • Required Skills and Experience

  • A bachelors or masters degree in : Engineering, Business Management, or Finance.
  • A track record in the energy sector, and cleantech / climate tech (disruptive innovation) markets.
  • Deep and thorough knowledge and understanding of the local Boston / US innovation ecosystem, its actors, and its rules of play.
  • Good understanding of corporate finance (M&A, VC, valuation, fund management) and / or Business Creation (early-stage investments, incubator / accelerator, spin-offs, start-ups, scale-ups, co-founding) and / or business development in the energy sector. Knowledge about public funding systems is a plus.
  • You are entrepreneurial and a skilled negotiator.
  • Proven staff leadership quality, strong service, and team orientation.
  • International work experience; strong PM skills.
  • You are results driven and able to deal with ambiguity, under tight deadlines.
  • This position is based in EIT InnoEnergys office in Boston. Regular travelling is required.
