ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE : Step 1 $3981 Step 4 $4225

  • However offer amount will be commensurate with candidates experience education skills and training.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE : Step 1 $3981 Step 20 $5800

PAY BASIS : Monthly

POSITION PURPOSE :

As part of Academic Affairs the mission of Library Services is to provide and promote a full range of supportive high-quality services to CSUB students faculty staff and the broader community. Our dedicated team is committed to meeting the diverse needs of our patrons at the main campus and in the Antelope Valley by ensuring timely access to materials and offering expert assistance with research and resource usage.

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Libraries the Library Services Specialist II performs various library circulation duties including but not limited to checking in / out library materials and assisting library patrons to resolve routine to moderately complex service issues. Responsibilities include ensuring the security and safety of library facilities through performing opening and closing procedures building rounds and coordination with campus departments as well as supporting resource sharing activities by retrieving scanning and processing materials. The incumbent provides functional lead direction to student assistants ensuring efficient accurate and customer-focused library operations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

Circulation Duties

  • Apply working knowledge of circulation policies procedures and their relationship to other library functions to independently perform a variety of circulation services.
  • Perform service activities involving checking in or out library materials and reserves using Circulation software. Update statuses of library items as needed. Provide patron check out overrides as required.
  • Provide basic Reference assistance in retrieving call numbers materials or searching for the availability of items and refer patrons to other Library or campus departments and resources for additional assistance when appropriate.
  • Respond to patron inquiries and complaints regarding circulation policies resolving routine and moderately complex issues using judgment and established guidelines.
  • Aid and instruct patrons in the retrieval of Library materials and use of Library resources or equipment.
  • Support reserve processing and coordinate with other staff and student assistants to ensure timely and accurate handling of reserve materials.
  • Assist in the acquisition of Library cards for Community Borrowers. Collect and enter confidential patron information into computer and confirm patron library privilege eligibility.
  • Monitor and contact patrons regarding items in the lost-and-found.
  • Lead student assistants on duty by directing work and providing guidance as needed.
  • Security Safety & Facilities

  • Perform opening or closing procedures for the building including conducting floor sweeps securing valuables doors the 24-Hour Room study rooms stacks materials and elevators and notifying patrons of building closure.
  • Report damaged or failed equipment / software furniture light fixtures or plumbing fixtures elevator malfunctions and alarm failures to the Deans Administrative Assistant or specified technician as needed.
  • Post out-of-order and caution notices when equipment or facility presents a safety risk.
  • Conduct rounds of the building to enforce library policy and safety including notifying patrons on non-compliance with library policy retrieving stray materials checking study rooms for compliance with individual study room policies and taking note of facilities issues.
  • Contact Campus Police Facilities Management Safety & Risk Management and / or the Deans Office in cases of emergency building alarms and disturbances.
  • Perform yearly safety inspections of all levels of the library with a representative of Safety & Risk Management communicate with library staff and faculty regarding safety corrections and submit completed corrections to Safety & Risk Management as remedied.
  • Note areas which need cleaning or additional supplies and notify the Deans Office Campus Copiers and / or custodial personnel to have the situation(s) addressed.
  • Resource Sharing

  • Print pull slips for requested materials.
  • Retrieve and photocopy requested items.
  • Oversee the retrieval and photocopying of requested items by student assistants ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Assist with processing of paging and digitization requests using established procedures and systems.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE High School diploma or equivalent certification and two (2) to three (3) years of related library and / or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

    SKILLS KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKAs)

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate library units policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Working knowledge of institutions and librarys policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries including working knowledge of institutions standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages such as word processing and spreadsheets to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints assess patron information needs and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system and LC subject headings.
  • Willingness to receive instruction and share knowledge.
  • Willingness to assist staff assigned to other functional areas with projects as needed.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate establish and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive cooperative productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable knowledge of English grammar spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing spreadsheets databases on-line systems Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Demonstrated skills in an institutional / educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS : MEDIUM WORK up to 40% of the activities involve sitting standing squatting kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS :

    SCREENING : Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training experience and interest in the position .

    BACKGROUND CHECK : Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and / or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
