Role : Penalty Review Specialist Location : Phoenix AZ 85007 United StatesMode : Hybrid Position (90% Remote, 10% Onsite as needed)Type : ContractQualifications : Some college coursework in accounting, business, or a related field OR 2+ years of professional experience.Spanish-speaking is a plus.Required Skills : Proficiency in Google Suite / Microsoft Programs (especially Sheets / Excel & Gmail).Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.Problem-solving and call-handling skills.Understanding of accounting and mathematical principles.Excellent written and verbal communication.Primary Duties and Responsibilities : Examine and analyze data submitted by customer applicants for penalty abatement consideration.Request clarifying information, evaluate testimony and evidence, and render decisions in compliance with procedural standards, statutes, and tax laws.Utilize problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to assess financial records and historical data.Educate taxpayers on filing requirements and recommend solutions for noncompliance when necessary.Prepare detailed case files for hearings and testify on behalf of the Arizona Department of Revenue.Develop, implement, and modify recordkeeping and accounting systems using current technology.Use automated accounting systems to retrieve, review, and analyze financial data in accordance with reporting standards.Detailed Duties and Responsibilities : Recommend and implement solutions to identified financial issues.Conduct analytical research on customer explanations and supporting evidence.Analyze financial records and historical data to determine compliance with Arizona Revised Statutes and tax laws.Apply problem-solving and critical thinking to assess penalty, liability, or requirement compliance.Compile and input data using Google Suite and Tax Accounting SystemsMaintain effective communication with staff, taxpayers, government personnel, and other stakeholders.Prepare clear, concise written summaries and reports.Present legal arguments, facts, and analysis logically; may represent the department at informal hearings.Interpret and apply statutes, laws, and procedures related to tax filing, penalties, and interest assessments.Perform mathematical calculations for tax, penalty, and interest assessments per department policies.Understand various tax types, policies, and legal references (local, state, and federal).Apply accounting and mathematical principles in a business context.Manage multiple projects with shifting priorities.Work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.Demonstrate proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office, particularly Sheets / ExcelExhibit strong problem-solving skills in variable situations.Perform other assigned duties related to the position.Follow established guidelines and procedures.
