JOB SUMMARY :

We are seeking a Part Time Medical Interperter in our Duke Health Center at North Duke Street located in Durham, NC.

 Serve as an interpreter between DUH or Duke Children's primary care employee and patient and / or visitor requiring medical interpretation.

Ensure that DUH or DHIP staff address all patient needs. Refer any unmet needs to the appropriate department. Carry a working page or smart device and promptly respond to requests if not busy with a request.

Interpreters are subject to initial and ongoing competency assessment evaluations.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide competent language assistance to facilitate communication between health care providers and patients / visitors who have limited English proficiency.
  • Interpret information as shared between DUH and DHIP providers and patients accurately and completely. Do not offer advice, opinions, or care recommendations .

You may inform patients about available resources, their rights, and responsibilities, and connect them with the respective departments or professionals when they want to complain, offer praise, or want a second opinion.

  • Translate written documentation for patient care services
  • Ensure that information pertaining to the patient's outpatient services, hospitalization, ( advance directives, consents from treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments and Health Care Education) are accurately communicated.
  • Provide interpreter services, and convey the exact message as opposed to summarizing the information in a way that is subjective.
  • Provide required documentation as identified by the International Patient Center.
  • Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services; notify Supervisor of any issues that may be problematic for patients or Duke staff
  • Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance professional role of International Medical escort.

Ensure that all policies and procedures related to process, service, and employee work rules are followed. Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitor issues on non-English speaking patients / families / escorts.

  • Participate in on call coverage to provide interpretation / translation services during non-business hours and business hours as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS :

  • Successful completion of conversation / translation competency testing in secondary language - this test is administered from Duke Hospital (submitted to take test prior to offer)
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred

JOB HOURS :

The schedule for this Part Time position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
