Job description

Arts for Learning Maryland (formerly Young Audiences of Maryland) is devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland’s youth through educational and culturally diverse arts programs. Through Arts for Learning, professional teaching artists from all disciplines partner with educators, schools, and school districts to provide on average over 560,000 hours of learning in, through, and about the arts to more than 155,000 Maryland students annually.

Job Description :

The Teaching Artist is the heart and soul of the Goodnow Summer program. Teaching artists are paired with a Student Support team member for the entire program. These pairs are responsible for delivering engaging, meaningful, and joyful instruction both in and through the arts. Teaching artists are required to plan for 3 Hour Arts activities in their art form, lead a small group of students in daily SQUADS, and will monitor recess.

The program is scheduled to run from 8 : 30 AM to 4 : 30 PM Monday through Friday from June 30, 2025 through August 8, 2025.

Summer Arts for Learning at Goodnow offers Baltimore City students in grades K-8 an energetic, healthy, and safe summer packed with opportunities to creatively collaborate, cooperate, and engage with peers and the community through art-making, recreational sports, and STEM-based pursuits.

In this FREE program, teaching artists support students’ educational enrichment, character development, and cultural understanding. Students at Goodnow will develop socially and emotionally, expand their creative process, and explore creative and athletic experiences that support their growth and development!

The mission of Arts for Learning at Goodnow Summer program is to provide students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend time learning from the best teaching artists our state has to offer. Through a dynamic, creative, and supportive environment, students will explore math and literacy in a unique arts-enriched environment that allows them to develop socially and emotionally, expands their personal creative process, and introduces them to many different art forms taught by professional artists.

Ideal Teaching Artists Have :

  • Expertise in an art form.
  • A commitment to our program by reporting to the site regularly to ensure that staff and students are well supported.
  • An ability to create inclusive environments where all students’ unique gifts and talents are discovered and cultivated, and where students’ identities (racial, cultural, social, gender, etc.) are acknowledged, affirmed, and reflected around them.
  • An ability to examine biases and an understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and its impact on policies and practices, especially related to the administration of public education.
  • A passion for students : an ability to build meaningful relationships and a desire to “go above and beyond” to ensure each student’s success.
  • A commitment to seeing families as partners in education and communicating with them regularly.
  • A strong interest (with experience preferred) in arts integration and collaborative planning and reflection.
  • A strong desire to fully integrate into a non-traditional learning environment where flexibility is strongly valued and where new and innovative ideas are not only cultivated but expected from all staff.
  • A willingness to use either the Goodnow’s office landline or their personal cell phone (number blocking is acceptable) to contact parents and guardians as needed.
  • A willingness to be flexible in service to our Goodnow community.
  • An ability to confidently co-teach in a classroom with up to 24 students.
  • An ability to attend and engage in all required training and program dates.
  • Required Dates, Times, and Working Hours :

    In order to be considered for employment, staff must be able to commit to attending all training and program days listed below. Please note that all dates and times are subject to change.

    Professional Development and Training :

  • Goodnow Teaching Artists will be provided Professional Development / Training materials prior to the start of the program. It is their responsibility to review all materials by June 23, 2025.
  • All staff will be required to attend up to 4 hours of Race Equity training on scheduled dates and times during the program (dates to be decided).
  • Mandatory in-person PD training is required for all staff from :
  • Wednesday, June 23, 2025
  • Staff are unable to begin working until these training sessions have been completed.
  • Program Dates and Details :

  • Student programming runs from June 30, 2025 through August 8, 2025, operating Monday-Friday from 8 : 30 am - 4 : 30 pm.
  • All staff will be required to work the program from :
  • Monday, June 30, 2025, through Friday, August 8, 2024
  • Hours for Teaching Artists are :
  • Monday-Friday from 8 : 30 am - 4 : 30 pm.
  • It is requested you arrive 5 minutes prior to your scheduled start time in order to be prepared for students entering the building.
  • Staff are expected to attend one 30-minute staff meeting per week. These will occur on Mondays, either before or after the program.
  • Compensation :

    The Goodnow Teaching Artist position is a temporary, non-exempt position and is not eligible for employee benefits beyond Sick and Safe Leave, which is accrued at 1 hour per 30 hours worked. This accrued leave is not paid out at the end of the program or upon termination.

    Teaching Artists will be compensated at a rate of $40 per hour for all training / PD dates and program hours.

    Job Responsibilities :

    Arts Instruction and Facilitation

  • Prepare and lead engaging, age-appropriate arts enrichment lessons and class projects for students in grades K–8.
  • Lead a 120-minute daily arts exploration session co-taught with a Student Support team member; the Teaching Artist is responsible for delivering instruction in their art form.
  • Facilitate a daily 15-minute SQUAD session (small homeroom group) that promotes character development and student connection.
  • Model, perform, and present your art form for students, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Planning and Documentation

  • Submit timely, well-researched lesson plans, subject to approval.
  • In partnership with a Student Support team member, develop and maintain daily lesson plans for all classes.
  • Complete all required paperwork as assigned by the Site Manager.
  • Ensure all supply requests are submitted within the approved budget.
  • Showcase and Student Work Presentation

  • Prepare and direct the student showcase and final culminating events.
  • Collect and curate student work, including photos and samples, for showcases and the A4L Goodnow yearbook.
  • Produce a theme-based performance or art gallery featuring student work.
  • Student, Family, and Community Engagement

  • Build strong, supportive relationships with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians to provide student progress updates, share challenges, and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate presentations for the A4L Board, donors, and other stakeholders during events such as open classrooms and community engagement tours.
  • Administer student program evaluations as needed.
  • Team Culture and Compliance

  • Foster a positive classroom culture aligned with the program’s mission, core values, and restorative practices.
  • Address student behavior and challenges in accordance with site expectations and procedures.
  • Demonstrate and reinforce team values including respect, unity, trust, transparency, and inclusivity.
  • Attend all staff meetings and Family Engagement activities.
  • Support and implement directives, policies, and procedures set by Goodnow leadership.
  • Submit verbal and written reports as required.
