Certifications required include BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS. CCRN certification is preferred. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 2 or 1 : 1. Charting is performed using Cerner Power Chart. Charge nurses do not take patient assignments. No nurse aides are available; a unit technician handles secretary and equipment duties. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Holidays are included in the regular rotation and must be covered by staff. Uniform scrub color is navy blue. The unit is equipped with 44 hardwired monitors. Monitor tech support is available, but centralized monitoring is not offered. Common infusions include vasopressors, nitroglycerin, and heparin. Ventilator management is provided. Hospitalist or intensivist coverage is available 24 / 7. Respiratory therapy is on-site 24 / 7. Pharmacy services are accessible around the clock. Shifts are scheduled from 0645 to 1915 or 1845 to 0715 with no self-scheduling allowed. Travel nurses may float to tele and emergency departments for ICU holds. Orientation includes one day in the ICU and one shift on the telemetry / stepdown unit. Typical patients include those with cardiac conditions, sepsis, strokes, and post-operative care. Travelers will not be assigned fresh open heart or craniotomy patients. Experience in general medical surgical ICU is required. Compassionate patient care is emphasized alongside clinical skills. The hospital has a cancellation policy allowing for the cancellation of up to four shifts per 13-week assignment.
