Patient-nurse ratios are based on the unit census, averaging 1 : 6 on nights. Staffing may also include 1 : 1 care for specific medications or therapies. Common patient diagnoses include various types of cancer, particularly lymphoma and leukemia. This unit cares for hematology patients and medical patients, including those receiving radiation oncology care. Experience with administering and monitoring IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy is essential. Nursing staff is not required to titrate drips; all adjustments must have physician orders. Commonly used drips include heparin and continuous chemotherapy. There is a Charge Nurse available 24 / 7 who may take an assignment as needed. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist in the unit, with specific staffing ratios based on census. Respiratory therapy support is available 24 / 7 for CPAP and BiPAP management. Telemetry is utilized, and nurses are not required to interpret monitor strips. Shifts follow a 12-hour schedule with varying start times based on unit needs. Staff typically works every other weekend and holiday, depending on staffing. Traveling nurses are part of the float rotation to assist in patient care across units as needed. EMR documentation is managed through a specified electronic system. Experience with IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration is required.
