Job description

About Holyoke Community College :

Holyoke Community College is housed on a multi-million-dollar, 135-acre campus, equipped with state-of-the art technology in specialized learning facilities. HCC serves over 9,000 students annually, and provides a variety of recreational and cultural activities, from sports programs to music festivals, for students and community members alike. The college's strongest assets continue to be an innovative spirit, a sincere concern for students and a commitment to strive for even greater success. These are the values which have created a tradition of excellence spanning more than six decades, and which are enabling Holyoke Community College to meet today's challenges.

Mission : Educate. Inspire. Connect.

Values : Kindness, Inclusion, Trust, Innovation & Collaboration

Kindness, inclusion and trust are the foundation of the work that we do together. Innovation and collaboration enable us to explore and implement the ideas that will shape our future.

The HCC English department serves the needs of the entire student body in teaching the core composition classes required for all degree programs. Our student body includes first-generation college students, English language learners, people with disabilities, and non-traditional-aged students. Many of our students are preparing to apply for transfer to selective colleges and local area colleges, while others are in certificate programs. We offer 200-level classes for English majors and other interested students and supportive developmental classes for those who are not yet ready for college-level work. The English department has also been continuously active in HCC’s well-regarded Integrative Learning Program, collaborating with colleagues across disciplines to offer Learning Communities, Honors classes, and Community-Based Learning courses.

We are seeking candidates with strong generalist skills and enthusiasm for teaching a range of classes that may include college-level composition, developmental composition, and various literature classes as determined by their interests and the department’s needs. Given the challenges we have seen since the pandemic, incoming faculty should be comfortable working with developmental-level students in college-level courses as well as developmental courses. Candidates should also expect to support students with non-academic and First-Year Experience needs since we regularly teach first-semester and first-generation students. English faculty members require a flexible mindset as we adjust methods of assessment and pedagogy in response to the advent of Artificial Intelligence and engage in other departmental assessment activities.

As part of the college’s efforts to ensure equitable outcomes for all HCC students, candidates must bring a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in their teaching practice, as well as a record of excellence in college-level instruction. In addition to teaching experience, candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to student-centered advising and an interest in actively engaging with the communities HCC serves.

Although hybrid and online teaching options may be available, this position will require a substantial amount of in-person, on-campus work with students, faculty, and the HCC community.

  • Teach foundational writing courses, as well as literature electives and developmental courses based upon the department’s needs.
  • Provide meaningful feedback and academic support to help students build confidence and competence in reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  • Develop inclusive and student-centered teaching methods that support students with varied educational backgrounds and learning needs.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain currency in the field of composition, including techniques in culturally relevant pedagogy, trauma-informed pedagogy, universal design for learning, and artificial intelligence developments.
  • Collaborate with HCC colleagues and staff to develop integrative and interdisciplinary learning courses, including Honors classes, Learning Communities, and Community-Based Learning courses.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in course, program, and general education assessment to improve best practices in teaching our varied student population.
  • Participate in departmental service by cycling through roles such as curriculum. coordinator or department chair or by participating in college-wide initiatives regarding student success, retention, and equity.
  • Provide academic advising suited to students’ career and transfer goals.
  • Meet with and assist students during office hours.
  • Participate in shared governance committees, as well as other committees, task forces, and sub-committees as required by the MCCC contract.

Required Qualifications :

Minimum two (2) years of teaching composition at the community college level or first-year level.

Equivalency Statement :

It is preferred that this document be uploaded separately from the resume, cover letter, and references.
