  • Recreation Coordinator – OOST & Camps Department : Parks + Recreation Reports To : Recreation Manager (Youth) Classification : Full-Time, Non-Exempt Compensation Range :   $50,000 - $65,000 Benefits :   Employee Benefits | Lake County, CO        Position Summary Under direction of the Recreation Manager (Youth), the Recreation Coordinator – OOST (Out of School Time) & Camps supervises, plans, coordinates, develops and evaluates a series of outdoor recreation orientated day camps and various Out of School Time recreation programs and special events for young people.
  • General Duties and Responsibilities Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Essential Functions Plan and implements a comprehensive year-round program of outdoor-recreation orientated day camps and youth activities, programs and events that engage pre-school, elementary, middle and high school populations, and include schedules, staffing, equipment and venue requirements, marketing and program evaluation.
  • Direct & coordinate assigned programs and ensures timely and accurate completion of assignments.
  • Serve as the on-site Director for a licensed summer camp program in compliance with Colorado state licensing rules and state health department regulations.
  • Develop and oversees GOL! out-of-school time programs including Rockies Rock Adventure Camp, Adventure Fridays, and school break day camps.
  • Responsible for meeting Colorado State Rules and Regulations regarding childcare, health code, and transportation of groups.
  • Maintain accurate and complete program web pages, as well as assist parents and staff with GOL! online registration.
  • Work with local partners to connect Lake County Youth to the outdoors year-round through out-of-school time programs.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of recreational sports participation events to include schedules, staffing, permits and permissions, course design, site plans, medical and safety plans, marketing, and event evaluation.
  • Monitor supplies used for programs and events, submits orders and maintains inventory systems.
  • Build partnerships with local schools, community groups, and other stakeholders to enhance program accessibility and delivery.
  • Track expenses and assists in managing the budget related to program area, records data in budgetary and accounting records and collects revenue.
  • Promote community health and wellness through engaging and inclusive programming.
  • Collaborate with maintenance staff to ensure facilities are properly prepared and safe for use.
  • Publicize recreation programs, camps and other offerings by working with other staff to create, produce and distribute printed and social media materials, and / or developing and maintaining web content.
  • Manage participant registration, tracks attendance, and prepares participation reports.
  • Monitor industry trends and community needs to maintain relevant and high-quality services.
  • Represent the Department at community events, public meetings, and workshops to advocate for recreation.
  • Provide excellent customer service by being attentive, professional, helpful and courteous to participants, staff and the public, escalating concerns and complaints to management as needed.
  • Assist the wider team in delivering a wide range of recreation programs and activities.
  • Assist in creating policies and procedures for program areas, Supervisory Responsibilities Performs supervisory activities including instructing, assigning and reviewing work; maintaining standards, allocating personnel, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees; and implementing evaluation procedures.

Requirements Compensation will be determined by the applicant’s full skillset with consideration of the below :

  • Must be at least 21 years old Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Education, Sport, Outdoor or Physical Education, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience in recreation programming with preference in a camp setting.
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, First Aid, CPR / AED certification.
  • Must meet Director Qualifications as defined by Colorado Child Care Licensing.
  • This position acts as the Camp Director for operating camps and therefore must have completed one of the following qualifications :

  • Twelve (12) months (1820 hours) of verified leadership experience in an administrative or supervisory position, with groups of children five (5) years of age or older, since the age of eighteen (18) years.
  • Six (6) months (910 hours) of verified leadership experience in an administrative or supervisory position, with groups of children five (5) years of age or older, since the age of eighteen (18) years and a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with a major area of study in one (1) of the following areas :

  • (1) Outdoor Education; or (2) Recreation Camp Director Certification from a nationally recognized organization and must have six (6) months (910 hours) of verified leadership experience in an administrative or supervisory position, with groups of children five (5) years of age or older, since the age of eighteen (18) years.
  • Knowledge of :

  • Colorado State Laws and Regulations regarding childcare, health code, and transportation of groups.
  • Outdoor recreation activities, equipment and safety management processes.
  • Principals, practices, and techniques of modern parks and recreation programs and facilities.
  • Relevant county, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Event and program planning methods and techniques.
  • Principles of effective supervision and team leadership to engage, motivate, and develop staff.
  • Relevant county, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Modern office practices and procedures.
  • Skill in :

  • Training and supervision of personnel.
  • Operating standard computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, registration software, credit card machines / point of sale and basic office equipment.
  • Interpersonal communication Ability to :

  • Work with a diverse population.
  • Work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere that provides citizens and employees with accurate information.
  • Communicate effectively with employees and various program and event users in order to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Use tact, discretion, confidentiality, and diplomacy when addressing sensitive situations, personnel matters, and / or concerned customers.

  • To assess risk as event relates to event and program planning and assist in composing and updating contingency plans with the safety of participants as the top priority.
  • Ensure assignments and duties of volunteers and staff are completed as prescribed.
  • Handle emergency or crisis situations and perform emergency care if necessary.
  • Comprehend, interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Ability to create, teach or lead various sports and activities.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize a variety of tasks and situations.
  • Work flexible and additional hours as needed, including night and weekends.
  • Pass criminal background checks, including Colorado Bureau of Investigations and TRAILS / Central Registry criminal record review as required by the Colorado Department of Social Services.
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish is desirable.
