SUMMARY : The Flight Nurse provides high quality pre-hospital advanced life support including assessment, triage and treatment utilizing the standards and guidelines established by the Medical Director(s) within scope of practice during the entire transport. They independently assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize the care needed for safe transport of the critical patient. Must be qualified to provide care for patients across the life span in the assigned clinical area. Responsible for carrying out the company mission and vision during the transport ensuring safety is the highest priority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides advanced life support care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility while working in small and compressed spaces. This includes planning and preparing for flight missions through review of patient information, communication with office staff, and sending facility staff.
  • Maintains thorough patient care documentation and completes charting within established timelines and guidelines.
  • Performs advanced skills and procedures as approved by Medical Directors.
  • Provides care within the scope of practice as defined by state regulation.
  • Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences. Identifies any educational needs and communicates these to the Education Committee, Lead Educator, or clinical leadership.
  • Maintains all required clinical certifications and attends in-services as needed to maintain clinical competence.
  • Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and advanced procedures according to scope of practice.
  • Responsible for reporting medical equipment failures and taking initial steps to ensure repair of equipment.
  • Maintains adequate supplies onboard aircraft to deliver patient care. Completes weekly inventory of supplies.
  • Responsible for keeping aircraft clean and orderly to ensure rapid response to all transport requests.
  • Participates in pre-mission briefings with crew and office staff and provides post mission debriefs.
  • Comply with all safety standards during all phases of transport and report all safety issues.
  • Reports all exposures, injuries, illnesses, and safety / clinical concerns promptly.
  • Serves as a preceptor and / or participates in orientation of new employees, as assigned.
  • Maintains professional demeanor during performance of assigned duty with colleagues, other transport representatives, hospitals, and the public.
  • Participating in committees, projects, activities, and positively represents the company in all interactions in the public and in social media.
  • Participate in clinical staff meetings by attending the meeting or reviewing recorded meetings. Responsible for all the information discussed.
  • Participates in the development and review of patient care guidelines and other standards as assigned.
  • Actively participates in departmental quality improvement projects or other projects as assigned.
  • Responsible for compliance with all policies contained in the Employee Handbook, Air Ambulance Operations Manual, Medical Crew specific policies, and Patient Care Guideline Manuals.
  • Responsible for compliance with all policies governing privacy, EMTALA, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS : REQUIRED :

  • Education : Associate degree in Registered Nursing
  • Experience : Minimum three (3) years of recent critical care / emergency nursing experience

  • Licenses : Current unencumbered RN license(s). Will be required to apply and obtain a license for MHP licensed states upon hire.
  • Certificates / Courses : Upon hire BLS / CPR, ACLS and PALS. Within 12 months of hire : Prehospital trauma (PHTLS, ITLS, or TPATC), FEMA NIMS ICS-100 / 200 / IS-700 / 800 / HAZMAT Awareness, and within 24 months of hire CFRN
  • International Requirements : Must maintain a current passport
  • Home base : Must live within 60 minutes travel time of the Domicile Airport List
  • Work week 8 days on and 6 days off. You will be away from home for all 8 days
  • Will be required to care for Adult and NICU / PICU patients
  • COVID Vaccination required
  • PREFERRED :

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related field
  • Experience : 3+ years of previous flight nursing experience or critical care ground transport.
  • License : Multi-state privilege license,
  • Certificates / Courses : Prehospital Trauma certification, NRP, FEMA Courses, CFRN, CCRN, TCRN, CEN, CPEN, Instructor Credentials

  • Ability to conduct activities requiring lifting of 100 lbs.

  • Ability to conduct activities requiring climbing, stooping, kneeling / bending and reaching on a frequent basis.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.

  • Ability to ascend or descend multiple stairs / ramps using feet and legs and / or hands and arms.

    While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions; and is frequently exposed to blood-borne pathogens or airborne particles, fumes and gases, electrical and chemical hazards, and vibrations / turbulence. Employees are frequently required to work during day and / or night operations. Pre-employment and annual physicals will be provided to include appropriate immunizations as required, back screening, and a PPD skin test for tuberculosis.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring hearing protection while in-flight, and at a moderate level when in the hospital environment. Pre-employment and annual audiograms will be provided to monitor hearing loss. Noise attenuation devices (ear plugs) are available to all employees, but it is the employee’s responsibility to utilize these devices to prevent hearing loss.
