Dispenses and administers medications as required. Assists Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques in the care and treatment of inmates / residents. Performs technical / clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates / residents and prepares a list for examination. Prepares the examining room and equipment for procedures. Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by policies and procedures. Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders as needed. Examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries. Refers inmates / residents to the emergency room or appropriate healthcare facilities as required. Performs emergency procedures when necessary and notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Monitors inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate. Provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by staff. Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff and contract providers. Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision making, applying sound judgment. Evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintains confidentiality and security of all medical records. Assists in the review of medical files to ensure documentation of provided services. Monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses closely. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as required. Complies with applicable pharmacy laws, especially regarding controlled substances. Observes and records inmate / resident behavior for proper assessment. Inspects the medical unit for potential contraband and disposes of items securely. Provides health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as necessary. Assists in the preparation and maintenance of standard records and reports. Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical documents as needed. Reviews and responds to lawsuits and attends court hearings when necessary. Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing approved and appropriate services. Prepares safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
