Job description

Program Manager

This position is based on Stanford's main campus with consideration given to the option for a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite), subject to operational need. Interested candidates must include a resume and cover letter to be considered for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment VISA.

The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability strives to create a future when humans and nature thrive in concert and in perpetuity. The school is made up of a three-part structure to drive global impact : Our academic departments and programs educate students and create new knowledge across areas of research that are crucial for advancing the long-term prosperity of the planet and people; Institutes bridge scholarship at Stanford and beyond, bringing multiple viewpoints to bear on urgent challenges; The Sustainability Accelerator drives new policy and technology solutions through a worldwide network of partners who work with our teams to develop solutions at a global scale. The school is dedicated to creating and supporting a community with the richness of experience and background needed to create solutions that benefit all people, particularly those most affected by environmental damage and climate change.

As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford's schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

The Program Manager will manage the development of the Shultz Energy Fellowships, the Schneider Sustainable Energy Fellowships, and the Summer Undergraduate Program on Energy Research (SUPER). While Shultz and Schneider place Stanford students in energy and climate roles across the western U.S. with leading government organizations and NGOs, SUPER offers students the opportunity to conduct on-campus research with Stanford faculty. We are looking for a Program Manager who is experienced in climate and energy, eager to work closely with students, and excited to strengthen and grow these experiential learning opportunities that connect academic training with real-world impact in the public, nonprofit, and research sectors.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Lead and execute experiential learning programsincluding the Shultz Energy Fellowships, Schneider Sustainable Energy Fellowships, and Summer Undergraduate Program on Energy Research (SUPER)in collaboration with campus partners and off-campus organizations. These programs currently support approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students annually, with plans to grow. The Program Manager plays a key role in sustaining and expanding these efforts, including stakeholder engagement and fundraising support.
  • Student engagement is a big part of this role. The candidate must have an enthusiasm to work with students and be excited about developing strong, lasting connections with them. Knowledge of Stanford University is preferred but not required.
  • Build partnerships and relationships between the Precourt Institute for Energy and California agencies such as the California Energy Commission (CEC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for public policy engagement and research.
  • Creativity, passion, and excitement to create positive, meaningful programs for Stanford students to help them navigate their connections with energy on campus is a must.
  • Develop streamlined workflows to manage tasks and resources for growing programs.
  • Build awareness and visibility of the programs across campus, including marketing and promoting the programs (and other student efforts at Precourt) and doing outreach to student-facing groups across campus.
  • Build and nurture relationships across Stanford's energy ecosystem, particularly with external partners. Relationship building is an important part of this role.
  • Mentor students, connect them to resources and opportunities, and help them chart a path forward based on their interests.
  • Manage Course Assistants and other student hires, including helping run team meetings and delegating tasks to others.
  • Develop and grow new efforts, such as an Alumni Advisory Board for the fellowship programs.
  • Manage and track fellowship program budgets starting at $250,000, including supporting the Assistant Director in developing comprehensive budget proposals and reports.
  • Collaborate and work together with other managers and leadership at the Precourt Institute, particularly the Explore Energy team.

To be successful in this position, you will need :

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize own work and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.
  • Interpersonal skills : Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.
  • Promote Culture of Safety : Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.
  • Subject to and expected to comply with all applicable University policies and procedures, including but not limited to the personnel policies and other policies found in the University's Administrative Guide.
  • The expected pay range for this position is $100,023 - $124,516 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package. The Cardinal at Work website provides detailed information on Stanford's extensive range of benefits and rewards offered to employees. Specifics about the rewards package for this position may be discussed during the hiring process.
