Duties and Responsibilities

1.

  • Coordinates with the Chair of the Asia Collection to develop and implement assessment strategies that inform priorities and focus areas for monographs and serials in the collection in accordance with established library procedures.

2.

  • Prepare reports and conduct analyses across multiple formats (print digital audiovisual special formats) to support evidence-based decision-making and collaborative planning.
  • 3.

  • Develops documented workflows and guidelines for adding withdrawing and relocating materials to ensure consistency and alignment with professional standards.
  • 4.

  • Maintains accurate holdings / items records in ALMA and related systems applying metadata standards to enhance access and discoverability.
  • 5.

  • Oversees initial processing of monographs received from South and Southeast Asia including workflow design student assistant supervision and preparation for copy cataloging.
  • 6.

  • Processes monograph orders per requests from the department chair for General Asia & Russia in Asia collections.
  • 7.

  • Coordinates reference scheduling for Asia Collection librarians managing desk coverage email rotations and annual planning.
  • 8.

  • Provides direct reference assistance at the departments service point referring users to subject specialists or appropriate departments as scheduled.
  • 9. Maintains clear regular communication with librarians and staff to ensure high-quality consistent reference services.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Humanities or Social Sciences or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for library services; or any equivalent combination of education and / or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

    2. Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of library operations & services as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.

    3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with supporting library services in a specialized collection.

    4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.

    5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

    6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.

    7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer apply word processing software and experience with other library-related programs such as LibGuides and Gimlet.

    8. If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

    20. Familiarity with Asian languages and non-roman scripts.

    Desirable Qualifications

    1. Knowledge of Asian Studies topics.

    2. Knowledge of library and archives descriptive standards.

    3. Coursework in Asian Studies or Library and Information Science.

    4. Experience supporting a diverse academic community.

    5. Familiarity with University of Hawaii at Manoa Library systems policies and procedures.

    6. Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn new tools and processes.

    7. Functional understanding of statistical concepts and sampling methodologies.

    interest in and ability to learn emerging technologies used in academic libraries.
