The purpose of Campus Health (CH) is to provide appropriate, affordable, accessible and high quality primary health care to eligible students, and provide a comprehensive disease-prevention and health promotion program in the NC State University community. The major function of Campus Health is that of providing outpatient care to the 34,000+ NC State students. Some level of medical care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year beginning in August and ending in May. Hours of service vary during the summer and during holidays and student breaks.

Essential Job Duties :

The Campus Health Nurse Director serves in a key leadership role that manages a team of healthcare professionals and ensures the provision of high-quality healthcare services. This position coordinates the delivery of health services, ensures compliance with healthcare regulations, and oversees quality improvement.

The Nurse Director plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local healthcare regulations, ensuring that all practices meet the highest standards of care and legal requirements. Working in tandem with the Medical Director and Executive Director, they collaborate to develop and implement evidence-based protocols and policies that promote excellence in healthcare delivery. Responsibilities are as follows :

Leadership & Strategic Management

  • Provide strategic leadership in clinical and administrative planning, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures as part of the Campus Health Governing Body.
  • Oversee the operations of three core areas :
  • Nursing Services : Ensure compliance with nursing regulations, staff growth, and departmental goals.

  • Quality Improvement : Drive accreditation efforts and manage infection control standards.
  • Project Management : Implement system improvements and manage operational efficiency projects.
  • Nursing Services Management

  • Ensure compliance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, procedures, and work standards.
  • Project and address staffing needs, including recruitment, training, and employee development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and manage employee performance, including disciplinary actions and dismissals as needed.
  • Collaborate with other Campus Health leaders to monitor service delivery and achieve operational excellence.
  • Triage System Development

  • Design and implement a comprehensive triage system to optimize access to clinical care.
  • Refine existing processes and develop new workflows as needed.
  • Train and support staff involved in triage, including front desk staff, nursing personnel, and providers.
  • Quality Improvement, Accreditation, and Patient Safety

  • Serve as the Quality Improvement (QI) Manager and oversee the Infection Control Coordinator.
  • Lead efforts to maintain compliance with Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) standards.
  • Report quality and infection control updates to the Executive Director and Medical Director.
  • Contribute to university-wide assessment reports and recommend consults with the medical liability carrier as necessary.
  • Design and implement a training curriculum for clinical and administrative staff that aligns with the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) principles.
  • Create a structured system for reporting, analyzing, and addressing patient safety incidents.
  • Develop and promote a culture of safety by establishing a system that encourages transparent reporting of patient safety incidents without fear of blame or retribution.
  • Project Management

  • Oversee the implementation and management of operational systems (e.g., Power DMS) to standardize procedures.
  • Collaborate with Campus Health leaders to identify and integrate new software tools for operational efficiency.
  • Other Responsibilities :

  • Minimum Education and Experience :

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
  • At least four years of experience in the area of specialization.
  • Other Required Qualifications :

  • Management competency and experience in a large ambulatory care clinic, acute care setting, or similar environment.
  • Strong communication skills to include active listening, clear and concise written and verbal communication, and conflict resolution through communication.
  • Leadership skills to include :
  • Strategic Thinking : Ability to plan and set goals for nursing services in alignment with the organization’s overall vision and mission.

  • Team Leadership : Inspire, motivate, and support nursing staff while fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Decision-Making : Sound judgment and the ability to make complex decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with five or more years of specialized experience in nursing or a related field OR Master’s Degree in Nursing, Nurse Administration, Public Health or related field with specialized experience in nursing or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in leading accreditation and quality improvement programs.
  • Experience in college health.
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s) :

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in North Carolina or ability to obtain prior to employment date.
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
  • Valid NC Driver's License required :
