Senior Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution. You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies platforms and capability domains creating clear and concise communications code samples blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization. You will specialize in a particular subject area but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.

As a Senior Distinguished Engineer you will join the Developer Experience organization within the Enterprise Platform Technology (EPTech) line of business. You will own and execute on high priority initiatives that enable developers to be more productive while influencing across the enterprise to drive our Developer Experience strategy. Specifically you will be partnering closely with cross-functional teams mentoring engineers providing technical guidance to teams and defining the strategy for how we develop and maintain software at Capital One paying special attention to how we ensure software stays current while minimizing the effort required of developer teams to do so. You will drive adoption of low surface area container images (distroless) standardize software build processes with technology like CNCF Buildpacks and move up the stack from the automated update of base images that we have today to addressing all types of software dependencies at scale for all applications developed at Capital One. Experience with tools that automate dependency updates as well as an understanding of how Generative AI might play a role in software updates will be valuable. This role will be responsible for big picture thinking strategic direction presenting to executive stakeholders and holding engineering teams accountable for overarching delivery goals.

Basic Qualifications :

Bachelors Degree

At least 9 years of experience with software engineering or software development

At least 5 years of experience with public cloud providers (AWS GCP or Azure)

Preferred Qualifications :

Masters Degree in Computer Science or a related field

10 years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development from conception through architecture implementation testing deployment and production support

10 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns working with business leaders on the implications of architectural decisions

5 years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages like Java Python Go JavaScript / TypeScript Swift etc.

5 years experience with DevSecOps and building software with CI / CD pipelines using GitHub Artifactory Jenkins Harness Sonar and AWS CloudFormation templates

5 years architecting enterprise applications on public cloud platforms and cloud ecosystems (AWS GCP or Azure)

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean VA : $308700 - $352300 for Sr Distinguished Engineer

New York NY : $336700 - $384200 for Sr Distinguished Engineer

Plano TX : $280600 - $320200 for Sr Distinguished Engineer

Richmond VA : $280600 - $320200 for Sr Distinguished Engineer

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidates offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation which may include cash bonus(es) and / or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
