Overhead lift equipment is available in all rooms. Bedside report and 1-2 hour rounding on patients are required. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 : 4-5 during the day shift and 1 : 5-6 during the night shift. Common diagnoses include end-stage renal disease, acute kidney injury, and hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. Other types of cases include parathyroidectomies, ileal conduit creations, TURP procedures, prostatectomies, kidney stones, graft / fistula repairs, and both deceased and living donor kidney and pancreas transplants. Experience in general medicine is required, while nephrology or urology backgrounds are preferred. Charge nurses are available 24 / 7 and do not typically take on a patient assignment, but may care for a small team if staffing requires it. House supervisors are also present at all times. Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1 : 10-11 on days and nights. Duties for technicians include vital signs, bathing, and other activities, and responsibilities are shared among all shifts. The unit does not require nurses to titrate drips. Respiratory therapists are available for assistance and respiratory treatments, although nurses administer inhalers. Telemetry monitoring is conducted by technicians on another unit, and nurses are not required to read or interpret telemetry information. Self-scheduling is available, and the unit is willing to accommodate traveler needs while fulfilling unit requirements. Weekend requirements involve working every other weekend, currently impacting night shift staffing less due to weekend-only positions already filled. Holiday requirements include working every other holiday. Floating to other general medicine units may occur, but this is infrequent. Scrubs of any color are acceptable with guidelines for personal appearance. The orientation program consists of three days with a preceptor.
