Job Description

Tidewater Staffing is currently seeking Shipfitters for work in various local shipyards.

Shipfitter Job Summary :

The Shipfitter must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to assemble, modify, layout, fabricate, repair, and install plates, shapes, and / or pipe to be used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship alteration and repair.

Shipfitters with 3 or more years of experience laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting parts of structural metal products with the use of regular supervision while always adhering to industry safety standards.

Essential Functions :

\n \n

  • Positions align, fit, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.

\n

  • Verifies conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • \n

  • Tack-welds fitted parts together.
  • \n

  • Lays out and examines metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
  • \n

  • Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
  • \n

  • Locates and marks work-piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
  • \n

  • Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
  • \n

  • Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
  • \n

  • Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
  • \n

  • Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
  • \n

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • \n \n

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

    \n \n

  • Measures, templates, cuts, and grinds components for foundations and other structural members.
  • \n

  • Efficient use of material to prevent waste.
  • \n

  • Advanced use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy / Fuel Torch).
  • \n

  • Advanced reading, and interpreting of blueprints (successful identification of material types, parts, references, applicable views / details).
  • \n

  • Advanced use of temporary attachments.
  • \n

  • Advanced understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, chamfers, and bevels).
  • \n

  • Advanced skill in the installation and removal of fasteners and rivets.
  • \n

  • Correctly identifies base material types and thicknesses.
  • \n

  • Advanced level tack welder in common shipboard positions (overhead, vertical, horizontal).
  • \n

  • Intermediate tack welding in uncommon / limited access positions (mirror, confined, heavy interferences)
  • \n

  • Expert with an Advanced understanding of fitting operations (coping, straightening, carbon arcing).
  • \n

  • Advanced knowledge of Erect and Set principles (identification / use of extra material, set to lines, etc.)
  • \n

  • Advanced understanding of material fabrication.
  • \n

  • Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application).
  • \n

  • Able to solve job issues without the need for Supervisory approval.
  • \n

  • Ability to read fit-up / alignments measuring devices (rulers / tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)
  • \n

  • Advanced use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills, etc.)
  • \n

  • Advanced use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)
  • \n

  • Correct setup of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.)
  • \n

  • Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points).
  • \n

  • Advanced use of positioning equipment (dogs / wedges, rams, saddles).
  • \n

  • Advanced knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689).
  • \n

  • Advanced knowledge of inspection standards (009-25, 009-06).
  • \n

  • Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning fire watches, 35’ rule, etc.)
  • \n

  • Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas / backsides of work areas.
  • \n

  • Advanced knowledge of industry safety standards / training.
  • \n

  • Adheres to industry safety standards.
  • \n

  • Requires occasional supervision to accomplish work.
  • \n
