Job Description and Duties

The Building Maintenance Worker is under the direct supervision of the Utility Shops Supervisor through the Supervisor of Building Trades and the Chief of Plant Operations I in Plant Operations at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH).

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to :

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials associated with general building practices.
  • Has the physical agility to climb and work off ladders, work on his or her hands and knees for prolonged periods of time, lift and carry a minimum of 70 pounds, work unassisted if necessary and work standing throughout the work day.
  • Maintains and up keeps all tools, equipment and buildings associated with Plant Operations.
  • Understands and follows all division of industrial safety and building codes when work is being performed in all areas of the facility.
  • Maintains and follows proper tool control procedures.
  • Understands and knows location of MSDS and protective gear and implements usage.
  • Reads, understands and conforms to all Hospital Administrative Directives (A.D.'s) and Plant Operations policies.

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE : Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at , OR

2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE : Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR

3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE : Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to being scheduled for an interview. Please provide proof of minimum qualifications with your application submission, which may include a copy of your unofficial college transcripts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Either I : One year of experience as a corpsmember in the California Conservation Corps. OR II : One year of experience in general semiskilled maintenance and repair work, or as a building maintenance or construction trades helper.

If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, the applicant’s name may be removed from the eligibility list.
