Job Description

The School of Arts and Sciences seeks a 12-month English / Humanities Faculty to deliver and support high quality learning for students enrolled in undergraduate pre-professional health programs on the Boston campus. The faculty member will have responsibilities teaching in the first-year writing program and Humanities electives with a potential to contribute to the undergraduate Health Humanities program. The candidate will have potential to work collaboratively with colleagues to coordinate all first-year writing course offerings. The selected candidate’s responsibilities include teaching, scholarship, and service on official committees of the school or the University.

  • Teaches first year writing courses (LIB 110 : Introduction to Academic Reading & Writing, LIB 111 : Academic Writing & Research, and LIB 112 : Writing in the Humanities). Teaching will also include Humanities electives and could contribute to our undergraduate Health Humanities program.

o Incorporates inclusive and active learning strategies in courses to promote student success.

o Uses the University’s learning management system to post syllabi, assignments, grades and other materials to communicate with students.

o Advises and assists students through office hours or scheduled appointments through university-approved mechanisms.

o Stays current with trends and best practices in writing instruction, including instruction to support multilingual students.

  • Potential to Coordinate all first-year writing instruction.
  • o Potential to manage the curriculum and ensure consistency across sections.

    o Potential to support adjunct faculty members teaching in the first-year writing program.

    o Potential to performs administrative duties to coordinate first-year writing program

  • Participates in assessment of first-year writing courses.
  • o Periodically review and revise course content to align with university needs.

    o Work with General Education Assessment Committee to support assessing LIB 111 and LIB 112 as part of general education assessment work.

  • Strives to stimulate learning and actively seeks advancement of teaching and learning processes.
  • Supports incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion in the curriculum.
  • Maintains an active scholarship agenda appropriate for this rank.
  • Participates in committee work as appropriate, advised by the department chair.
  • Assumes other duties as requested by the Dean of Arts & Sciences and Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Supports incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion into the curriculum, as well as co-curricular experiences, to broaden the education of students and expand their knowledge of health disparities.

    Requirements

    Required :

  • Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in English, Composition, Humanities, or similar discipline.
  • Rank will be commensurate with experience.
  • Commitment to undergraduate education and student success.
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching writing at the college / university level.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Record of scholarly activities commensurate with rank and evidence of potential for continuing scholarly development.
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, effectively interacting with a wide array of parties at all levels (undergraduate students, faculty, administration, staff).
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems (such as Blackboard).
  • Interest or current engagement with the Health Humanities (preferred)
  • Interest or current engagement with the role of AI in teaching and learning, transformation in college writing programs, and writing across the curriculum (preferred)
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Work requires sitting, standing and walking as part of classroom instruction
