Job Summary
This critical leadership role reporting to the Vice President of Development and Institutional Advancement is a new role in the Office of Development and Institutional Advancement (Advancement) at The J. Paul Getty Trust (Getty). The Deputy Director will inspire and lead the Advancement team to cultivate a well-informed connected community of champions who are strongly committed to our common goals and desired outcomes.
We are looking for an experienced dynamic and creative leader with exceptional listening skills and a proven track record of engaging in authentic and substantive dialogues with donors and partners to recognize nurture and facilitate philanthropic desires to realize our shared addition the Deputy Director will help ensure ongoing relationships with and raising the sites of a small select group of supporters.
The Deputy Director is a key member of Advancements Leadership Team and works closely with Senior Director of International Programs and Institutional Advancement. A highly motivated self-starter who is goal oriented the Deputy Director will help to set the tone for culture and ensure that the advancement team has the support direction and accountability needed to meet annual divisional goals and objectives. The Deputy Director is responsible for managing three team leaders and indirectly the four key areas :
- a strategic mission-advancement giving programs team who build long-term mission-aligned relationships with partners of all types (e.g. individuals and organizations) through strategic giving;
- a donor relations team comprising two arms :
donor communications area responsible for acknowledging recognizing and reporting on the impact strategic giving has;
a donor experience area responsible for showing the impact of the partnership among donors and Getty; andan advancement operations who serve as the data analytical and strategic powerhouse of the overall advancement team.The Advancement team co-creates opportunities for individuals institutions and groups to contribute in ways that reflect our shared values and advance our common goals for cultural enrichment and collective impact. Serve as a strategic partner in advancing Gettys mission aligning fundraising efforts with institutional priorities and fostering a culture of shared purpose and long-term impact.Cultivate enduring values-based relationships with approximately 25 current and prospective supporters focusing on mutual mission alignment and the potential for transformational contributions over time.Lead with innovation and collaboration in developing fundraising programs that integrate donor relations external affairs prospect development and program partners to create meaningful pathways for engagement.Craft and coordinate proposals that reflect Gettys strategic vision and invite supporters to co-invest in initiatives that resonate with their values and aspirations.Ensure stewardship is timely authentic and personalized reinforcing trust and deepening commitment through compelling narratives of impact.Inspire and model a culture of generosity setting ambitious yet mission-aligned goals for revenue and donor engagement while emphasizing relationship quality over transactional outcomes.Track and achieve key engagement metrics including meaningful relationships built and deepened and commitments renewed and made anew while prioritizing the depth and integrity of each interaction.Identify pivotal moments for leadership engagement o ffering coaching and strategic guidance to ensure donor conversations are grounded in shared purpose and institutional vision.Advise on campaign design and execution ensuring efforts are inclusive mission-driven and reflective of Gettys evolving priorities.Proactively identify and engage new champions including those not yet in Gettys orbit who demonstrate alignment with its mission and the potential for significant philanthropic partnership.Facilitate thoughtful and strategic conversations about the possible coordinating communications and next steps that reflect the values and interests of both the institution and its supporters.Lead collaborative strategy sessions and prepare leadership for donor engagements with insight empathy and a focus on shared outcomes.Champion inclusive team-based fundraising ensuring strategies are co-created and centered on the donors journey and experience.Partner with the donor communications and donor experience teamsto co-create compelling proposals ensuring each solicitation reflects the donors values and the institutions aspirations.Document meaningful interactions promptly capturing insights that inform future engagement and deepen institutional memory.75% - Leadership team development strategic planning and operational oversight :
Co-create an annual strategic roadmap for Advancementin partnership with the VP grounded in Gettys mission and values with clear milestones that reflect both institutional priorities and team aspirations.Foster a culture of mentorship and mutual accountability guiding team members to grow as thoughtful values-aligned partners in philanthropy while supporting them in achieving meaningful mission-centered goals.Develop shared goals and adaptive performance measures that reflect both individual strengths and collective impact and regularly reflect with the team on progress learning and opportunities for growth.Represent the VP of Advancement with authenticity and purpose serving as a thoughtful ambassador at meetings community events and collaborative initiatives.Ensure policies and practices are implemented with integrity and inclusivity reinforcing a culture of ethical fundraising and respect for donor intent and institutional values.Model open empathetic communication cultivating a team environment where humor humility and curiosity are valued as essential leadership traits.Collaborate across departments and divisions to co-create materials and insights that support meaningful donor engagement especially for principal and planned gifts.Serve as a trusted thought partner and coach offering strategic guidance on cultivating soliciting and stewarding committed supporters in ways that honor their values and deepen their connection to Gettys mission.Support and guide key volunteers ensuring their involvement in donor engagement is purposeful well-prepared and aligned with Gettys philanthropic vision.Partner with prospect research to shape balanced inclusive portfolios ensuring all team members have opportunities to engage new and diverse supporters in meaningful ways.Steward the units budget with transparency and strategic foresight aligning resources with the teams shared goals and the institutions long-term vision.Qualifications
