Position : Sr. Commercial Loan Officer

Department : Business Services

Reports To : Vice President- Business Services

FLSA : Exempt

SUMMARY

Responsible for the effective management of a segment of the Credit Union's Business Services Program, including new business development and relationship management activities within the Credit Union's primary market area. Establish and expand business relationships within the Credit Union's target market area with prospective business owners, existing Credit Union retail members who are business owners, businesses that represent existing Select Employee Groups (SEGs), as well as other non-public companies. Assist Commercial Lenders with preparing packages that will be presented to the Business Loan Committee. In addition, the position will assist the Vice President of Business Lending with the annual review and revision of the sales and marketing plan for the Credit Union's Business Ranking Program, including recommendations for new product development, as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Managerial duties consist of interviewing, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, coaching, counseling, disciplining, and the direct supervision of a medium sized subordinate group of employees (typically 3-8). Lead and coach team members to ensure timely, accurate and efficient completion of department functions. Responds to questions, concerns and complaints within scope of authority. Assists with quality assurance monitoring, evaluating, and training of staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages a portion of the Credit Union's Member Business loan activities, ensuring that loan, deposit, and fee income generation meets or exceeds the objectives of the annual business plan.
  • Assists the Vice President of Business Services in developing and implementing marketing plans to gain new business members and deepen product penetration among existing business members.
  • Conducts cold calling and prospecting with appropriate target base to develop loan, deposit and fee based relationships. Maintains frequent contact with targeted member base through out-of-office visits to expand member relationships, ensure member retention and meet financial goals and objectives.
  • Actively participates in business and civic organizations.
  • Develops a portfolio of new business with direction provided by the Vice President of Business Services and / or the Sr. Vice President / Chief Lending Officer, achieving a balance between measured growth and asset quality, while maintaining desired levels of member satisfaction.
  • Maintains an awareness of competitive products, practices, and pricing reflecting changes in the Credit Union's primary market area, through out-of-office calling program.
  • Keeps abreast of economic, financial and political trends to assist in the determination of risk in establishing and maintaining member relationships.
  • Collects necessary loan application information from prospects and existing Business Members to advise business owners on the selection of appropriate loan, depository and investment products.
  • Reviews business loan applications and supporting financial statements to develop information sufficient to decision the borrowing capacity, capitalization, and cash flow dynamics of the applicant.
  • Spreads financial statements, calculates certain ratios including measures of liquidity, leverage and cash flow, and approves / decisions business loans up to approved lending authority.
  • Prepares Credit Approval Memoranda for loans in specified transaction ranges for review by the Vice President of Business Services and the Business Loan Committee.
  • Coordinates marketing activities with the Business Development Team, including joint calling when appropriate to capitalize on referrals from this important internal network.
  • Responsible for compliance with all Federal regulations including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
  • Other Duties as Assigned :

    Miscellaneous duties as assigned by Vice President-Business Services.

    Education :

    Equivalent to a college degree (BS or BA in a relevant field).

    Experience and Other Requirements :

  • Five or more years of similar or related experience.
  • Experience as a Team Leader or Credit Officer at a credit union or regional financial institution, including formal credit training or other equivalent training is desirable.
  • Sales training experiences should include consultative selling skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of commercial lending and commercial banking laws. Aptitude to assimilate state banking and NCUA Member Business loan regulations, as well as the Credit Union's Member Business Loan Policies and Procedures.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to promote teamwork and coach Credit Union team members in the Business Services Department as well as other business units, particularly branch locations, that might become involved in business loan marketing activities.
  • Strong interpersonal, selling, and negotiating skills with proven sales abilities.
  • Must develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of Symitar System.
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills, with high degree of computer literacy and fluency in various Microsoft programs, as well as "standard" spreadsheet tools.
  • Strong credit underwriting skills, including business and individual financial statement analysis with special focus on liquidity, leverage, cash flow and risk grading.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to manage a number of priorities simultaneously, establish and meet deadlines, coordinate activities with other departments, and perform the job with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Computer Skills :

  • Must be proficient in use of Personal PC, including Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be proficient using the internet and e-mail.
  • Interpersonal Skills :

    A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating, influencing, or training others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and / or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and / or sell ideas or services to others.
