Job description

PURPOSE : The position of Lead Maintenance Specialist (Water Pollution Control Center) performs work with the installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and grounds, including all equipment specific to the treatment of wastewater in the facility and collection system. This position provides leadership towards other personnel in the WPCC Maintenance Department, such as training, scheduling of task assignments, maintaining direct planning and communication with WPCC Supervision, and providing information and project direction to WPCC personnel. In the event the WPCC Asset Maintenance Supervisor is absent the Lead Maintenance Specialist assumes the day-to-day maintenance supervision duties until the Asset Maintenance Supervisor returns, unless otherwise specified. This position performs skilled and manual labor. Reports for duty in emergency situations and works a rotational on-call weekend and holiday schedule. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Executes repairs or replacement of equipment as identified by the WPCC Asset Maintenance Supervisor or maintenance program. Troubleshoots and repairs problems associated with mechanical equipment or electrical components or devices. Works independently or in concert to troubleshoot plant and lift station controls including reprogramming computer or communication software. Leads and performs routine maintenance work of maintenance crews, including mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment. Determines need for parts and maintains inventories; works with administrative staff to order repair parts and replacement equipment with appropriate approvals. Provides input to management regarding equipment repair or replacement. Works with and inspects contractor work on premises. Monitors plant equipment, processes, instrumentation and SCADA to determine if appropriate and normal plant conditions exists. Identifies abnormal parameters and makes corrections to improve the treatment process. Operates equipment for cleaning sanitary sewers, including sewer jet and jet / vac. Troubleshoots and repairs problems associated with mechanical equipment or high voltage electrical components or devices. Maintains records of equipment repairs. Orders parts and maintains inventory, as required, in anticipation of equipment repairs. In absence of the Asset Maintenance Supervisor, works with administrative staff to create purchase orders, review invoices, review section expenditures, and enters or oversees entry of work orders and updates computerized maintenance program. Collaborates with the Asset Maintenance Supervisor to further organize and evaluate the progress of ongoing and future projects within the department. Promotes and maintains positive relations with other City department staff and the community in general. Promotes teamwork within the Maintenance section. Leads maintenance personnel in absence of Asset Maintenance Supervisor. Provides training, mentoring, and instruction to maintenance staff. Assigns and collects equipment to employees for work projects. Organizes crews for utility equipment emergencies. REQUIREMENTS : Associate degree or equivalent in water, wastewater, electronics, or industrial technology or related field. Certification as a licensed Wastewater Operator by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with subclasses A1, B, C, D, and P or obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement (Classes B, C, D, N) or obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment. Four (4) years of specialized or technical training or experience in electronic and electrical repair, gas and electrical utility supply, including safe working knowledge of high voltage electrical, full working knowledge of low voltage electrical, computer systems and power generation. Eight (8) years experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, HVAC, and other wastewater treatment maintenance activities. At least 5 years of specialized or technical training in electrical repair. At least 5 years experience in maintenance of electronic, electrical, and mechanical equipment. Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered. Shift schedule is Monday-Friday 6 : 30 a.m. – 3 : 00 p.m. 2026 SALARY RANGE : Salary Grade 126 $37.77 -$43.17 per hour with excellent benefits. Appointments are usually at the beginning of the range.
