Since its founding in 1997, The Surgical Clinic has continued to attract talented surgeons, becoming one of Middle Tennessee's most respected practices. The addition of our physician owned Tennessee Surgery Center (TnSC) in 2021, has allowed us to also become the "go to" Ambulatory Surgery Center for safe, efficient, and affordable multi-specialty care for the community.
Tennessee Surgery Center specializes in General Surgery, Robotics, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry, Female Urology, GYN, Surgical Oncology, Vascular, ENT and Pediatric Oral / Dental procedures.
Position Summary :
The Certified Surgical Technician (Scrub) is an essential member of the surgical team who provides technical support and assistance during surgical procedures in the ambulatory surgery environment. The Surgical Technician works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgeon to ensure that the operating room is prepared, organized, and maintained in accordance with facility standards and regulatory requirements.
The Certified Surgical Technician is accountable for performing duties in compliance with facility policies, AORN standards, and all applicable laws and regulations. This role requires sound judgment, technical proficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center environment.
Essential Functions :
- Prepares the Operating Room (OR) : Ensures surgical suites are properly cleaned, stocked, and equipped for each procedure. Verifies functionality and availability of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintains Sterile Technique : Establishes and maintains the sterile field, ensuring adherence to aseptic principles throughout the surgical procedure. Monitors for breaks in sterility and takes immediate corrective action when necessary.
- Prepares and Handles Instruments and Supplies : Opens sterile supplies, sets up surgical trays, and arranges instruments according to the needs of the surgeon and the specific procedure.
- Anticipates Surgeon's Needs : Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures to anticipate and efficiently provide instruments, sutures, and supplies as requested by the surgeon.
- Assists During Procedures : Actively participates as a scrubbed member of the surgical team, maintaining organized instrument tables and assisting with retraction, suctioning, and other intraoperative tasks as directed.
- Performs Counts : Participates in surgical counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps with the circulating nurse according to policy to ensure patient safety and prevent retained surgical items.
- Cares for Specimens : Properly handles, labels, and passes off specimens in accordance with facility policy and regulatory requirements.
- Assists with Room Turnover : Efficiently cleans and re-prepares the operating room between cases, ensuring timely readiness for subsequent procedures.
- Maintains Equipment and Instruments : Ensures proper cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of instruments. Reports malfunctioning equipment and assists in minor troubleshooting as appropriate.
- Supports Infection Control Standards : Adheres to all infection prevention and control practices in handling instruments, supplies, and environmental surfaces.
- Promotes Patient Safety and Confidentiality : Complies with all facility safety protocols and HIPAA regulations. Demonstrates awareness of patient privacy and dignity throughout the surgical experience.
- Collaborates with the Surgical Team : Communicates effectively and professionally with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and peers to support optimal patient outcomes.
- Participates in Continuous Improvement : Engages in ongoing professional development, skills validation, and performance improvement initiatives to enhance the quality of care.
Qualifications and Requirements :
High school diploma or equivalent required.Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program required or Qualifies for the "Grandfather Clause" with a Surgical Tech diploma prior to 2000.Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)or equivalent required.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).Minimum of one (1) year of surgical technologist experience preferred, ideally in an ambulatory surgery or outpatient environment.Experience in multiple surgical specialties (general surgery, plastic, robotic, laparoscopic etc.) strongly preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and operating room procedures.Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team in a variety of procedures.Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe, sterile, and efficient operating environment.Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to collaborate effectively with nurses, anesthesia providers, and surgeons.Demonstrates sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced ASC environment.Physical Requirements :
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during surgical procedures.Capable of lifting, pushing, or carrying up to 50 pounds, including equipment and supplies.Adept at bending, stooping, reaching, and maintaining manual dexterity for precise instrument handling.Sufficient vision and hearing to perform duties safely and accurately.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).Tolerant of operating room conditions, including bright lights, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.
