Job description

Nurse Manager

Relocation Assistance available up to $18,000

Pay range : $134,409.60 / yr - $210,017.60 / yr

Functions as the Nurse Manager for one or more department(s) within the nursing units. Assumes 24 / 7 responsibility and accountability for all patient care activities, unit operation, and staff function as well as directs and supervises all technical and management aspects. Functions in direct bedside patient care when necessary and in order to keep clinical skills current. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with the organizational philosophy and objectives. Fosters highly skilled professional practice, in accordance with the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) and develops high functioning interdisciplinary teams. Reviews and approves nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, plans for provision of treatment and service. Assures ongoing quality improvement programs are incorporated in clinical / nursing care, treatment and services delivered to patients. Facilitates process improvement activities to meet expected quality metrics. Serves as a catalyst for change within the organization and department to advance patient care and staff engagement. Practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing Administration : Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators and the ANA Code of Ethics.

Key Responsibilities :

Holds staff accountable for adhering to policies, processes and standards in a consistent manner.

Helps staff through change by consistently being a positive role model.

Completes HR and Payroll deadlines such as completing PDS's and ePA's within expected timeframes.

Shares information regarding business direction and goals in a timely and positive manner along with corporate and departmental financial status with employees.

Ensures employee licenses and certifications are current.

Supervises and coordinates the efforts of department leaders.

Coordinates and implements project / programs and performs other management duties as assigned by the administrative team. Participates with the administrative team in strategic planning.

Participates and / or leads assigned committees (i.e. Code Blue Committee).

Ensures staffing for areas of responsibility is adequate to address continuity of care, patient acuity and appropriateness of care considering age, culture, ethnicity and personal belief systems.

Assures that systems are in place to implement the findings of current research from nursing, rehabilitation and other literature into the policies and procedures governing the provision of patient care.

Promotes the retention, recruitment, development and continuing education of staff.

Oversees and directs department activities including standards, scope of practice, policies / procedures for areas of responsibility (should be consistent with O-85).

Assures that department policies are aligned with OSBN's scope of practice and revises and educates on policy changes.

Understands recourses in regards to compliance, HIPPA, privacy and HR concerns and escalates issues when needed.

Participates in corporate programs and attends appropriate meeting to enhance communication and to assist in achieving corporate goals.

Communicates safety expectations and necessity for staff to attend annual training.

Assures that quality improvement monitoring and evaluation is implemented and maintained.

Provides assistance and support to the marketing and promotion of hospital services.

Participates in regional professional organization on a regular basis to provide professional growth.

Decision making is influencing the department and can influence the organization.

Job Specifications

Education :

Required : Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Master of Science in Nursing can be used in lieu of BSN; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

Preferred : Master's degree in related nursing field.

Experience :

Required : Minimum of three (3) years combined clinical nursing experience and leadership experience and Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

Experience with hiring, staff development, and team building.

Experience with quality improvement; developing initiatives, monitoring, and demonstrated improvements in improving clinical care quality.

Preferred : A minimum of three (3) years' experience in management positions within disciplines or areas managed highly desirable.

Licenses, Certifications and / or Registrations :

Required :

FOR ALL AREAS :

Current unencumbered license as registered nurse in state of Oregon.

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS.

Emergency Department :

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS preferred upon hire and required within 90 days of hire.

PALS or ENPC preferred upon hire and required within 90 days of hire.

Preferred : FOR ALL AREAS :

Nursing Leadership certification.

Emergency Department :

CEN

Required :

Knowledgeable of governmental, outside agency, and accrediting bodies' rules, regulations, and requirements for areas managed. For example, State and Federal regulations governing administration of long-term care, Oregon State Board of Nursing, requirements if managing nurses, etc.

Skill in policy formulation, including writing skills and group presentation skills.

Demonstrates effective written, communication and interpersonal and applies them to change management, team building, and facilitation of team effectiveness.

Possesses knowledge of current concepts of nursing and medical practices, and skills necessary in providing appropriate care for patients' unique needs based upon age, culture, ethnicity and belief systems.

Exhibits effective conflict resolution skills and strong collaborative skills in daily interactions and decision-making.

Demonstrates ability to use a personal computer efficiently.

Must be able to function effectively and professionally in high stress and critical situations.

Must have knowledge of leadership, organizational skills and the care process to provide appropriate care for patients' unique needs based upon age, culture, ethnicity and belief systems.

Promotes healthy communication and conflict management among staff and between departments.

Encourages staff participation in personal and professional growth opportunities.

Adopts and learns to use new technologies effectively.

Leads in problem identification and resolution for areas of responsibility including regulatory mandates.

Actively works with staff to reinforce commitment to a safer workplace.

Utilizes problem solving processes and tools, such as PDSA, to resolve complaints and / or concerns.

Encourages staff participation in process review in order to improve the delivery of care.

Works in cooperation with and under the consultation of the appropriate medical director.

Utilizes team skills, including but not limited to knowing when to offer both teams and individuals the ability to manage on their own; developing, assisting, supporting and acknowledging others.

Demonstrates knowledge of hiring and compensation process / policies.

Works to improve communication among staff and other departments.

Gives regular feedback to staff including performance feedback and recognition. Manages poor performers in a consistent and timely manner.

Preferred : FOR ALL AREAS :

Knowledge of OSHA regulations, workers' compensation management, The Joint Commission, Oregon State Board of Nursing, and State and Federal regulations.

Bilingual skills a plus.
