Job Description and Duties
The Department Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region Inland Fisheries and Wild Trout unit has an opening for a Limited Term Environmental Scientist. The incumbent will be part of a team of scientists working to survey and conduct restoration activities within the Trinity Alps Wilderness, Russian Wilderness and Marble Mountain Wilderness areas. This project seeks to reduce the compounding effects from drought, climate change, and invasive predators on declining native amphibians by identifying and actively managing invasive fish populations in key drought-resilient lake basins.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team in a position that provides development of expertise in fisheries and herpetology science and management, survey and study design, designing, implementing, and monitoring habitat restoration projects, data analysis, scientific writing, California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and other environmental laws and regulations. This position will require a significant commitment to backcountry work, hiking, camping, and operating 4-wheel drive vehicles in remote high mountain environments. Overnight travel, including backpacking and car camping, will be required.

This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.
During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Working Conditions
Ability to use a computer and a suite of various software necessary for data storage / retrieval, population analysis, and report writing. Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, operate a variety of boats, trailer and launch a boat, and use an all-terrain vehicle / side-by-side. Possess a valid Driver’s License. Spend time indoors processing documents, and spend time outdoors in rugged terrain, hot and freezing conditions, high elevation work, hazardous organisms, backpacking, overnight camping, and overnight travel, including multiple days of backpacking or car camping is required. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and during site visits. This is a 12 month Limited-Term position that may be extended up to 24 months. This position may become permanent.
Special Requirements
Special Physical Characteristics : Physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote backcountry settings, with frequent overnight camping for eight days at a time is required; carry up to 40 pounds over rough terrain (backpacking); ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes.
