The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (Virginia ABC) is currently seeking applicants for the Paralegal II role. The primary purpose of this position is to provide litigation support to attorneys in the Office of Legal Counsel. This position will provide legal and administrative support, conduct legal research, prepare legal documents and will respond to and answer questions from the public, attorneys and staff in a prompt and professional manner. This role supports the Authority's mission of providing control of ABC licenses, service to all ABC customers and collection of revenues.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Familiarity with the administrative hearings processes, the Virginia Administrative Process Act, policies and relevant ABC laws and regulations.
  • Maintain and update electronic and manual case files by entering critical file tracking data into our databases.
  • Proofread documents prepared by attorneys and other office personnel to ensure substantive accuracy as well as correct grammar and spelling.
  • Prepares outgoing mail, faxes and Authority correspondence.
  • Issues subpoenas for essential witnesses requested by interested parties.
  • Assists in drafting and distributing board orders.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic legal principles, processes and research methods.
  • Acts as a customer service liaison between licensee, ABC agents, or other ABC staff, and attorneys for ABC administrative hearings and appeals docketed and decisions released by the division.
  • Gathering and analyzing research data, such as statutes, regulations, case decisions, legal articles, federal codes and documents.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) including case law related to FOIA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Political Science or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a paralegal with significant experience in litigation, real estate, and general practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Paralegal Certificate and / or Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Political Science, or related fields.
  • Experience working for multiple attorneys within a mid-to large firm.
  • Prior knowledge / experience with FOIA
  • Prior knowledge / experience with the Virginia General Assembly
