Job Description

Job Title : Respiratory Therapist

Profession : Respiratory Therapist

Experience : Previous acute care experience preferred

License : NYS Licensure Required

Description :

Under the general direction of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist provides professional and technical care to patients requiring specialized respiratory care interventions.

He / She collaborates with patients, families, peers, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team in the delivery of healthcare services to a specific patient population.

The Respiratory Therapist assesses patient needs and contributes to the plan of care.

He / She implements and evaluates the effectiveness of respiratory regimens in accordance with patient needs and documents findings in the medical record.

Care is based on age-appropriate knowledge, institutional policies, and professional standards.

The Respiratory Therapist effectively communicates essential patient and family information to healthcare team members.

He / She solicits feedback from other team members to ensure comprehensive care delivery.

Identifying and considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and environmental needs is essential to promote dignity and healing.

Responsibilities include obtaining and analyzing physiological specimens.

The therapist also interprets physiological data and performs tests and studies of the cardiopulmonary system.

Documentation and appropriate reporting of results are required.

He / She administers and monitors medical gases and environmental control systems.

The role includes providing mechanical ventilator support and airway management for both natural and artificial airways.

Bronchopulmonary hygiene and pharmacological agents related to respiratory care procedures are part of the responsibilities.

The Respiratory Therapist engages in patient education activities to promote knowledge of disease processes, medical therapy, and self-help techniques.

Maintaining current knowledge and competency in the practice of Respiratory Care is essential.

Participation in the mentoring and orientation of staff is expected.

Consideration of factors related to safety, cost, and impact is necessary when planning care delivery.
