Multnomah County Library seeks a relationship builder to join our Community Engagement team as our Black Cultural Competency Community Services this role you will support community engagement efforts with the Black and African American community to inform the continual development and implementation of library programs and services. This is done in collaboration with other teams within our organization teams as well as other staff with cultural or language focuses.

As our Black Cultural Competency Community Services Coordinator you will provide subject matter expertise to our program offerings and our engagement with the Black and African American community. This will be accomplished in part by the following which is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities :

  • Working collaboratively with our Black Cultural Competency team to gather information and input that informs development and services to the Black and African American community.
  • Facilitating planning between library groups and partner organizations creating a unified model of service delivery to the Black and African American community.
  • Implementing and supporting projects derived from community input and engagement sessions focused on serving the Black and African American community within the scope of the Librarys service priorities.
  • Representing the Library in the community.
  • Identifying service updates changes or additions that best meet the library needs of community members and serving as a liaison between community members and library leadership.
  • Serving as the liaison between the Multnomah County Library and other county departments in relation to outreach services to Black and African American community within the Librarys service priorities.
  • Partnering with Community Engagement team members and other staff in the organization to collaborate on services and programs that may be cross-culturally beneficial.
  • Engaging with volunteers to support culturally specific services and programs.
  • Assisting with monitoring budget expenditures if applicable and providing reports for grant funded services as well as implementing and supporting formal written agreements.
  • Collaborating with the Outreach Librarian to provide technical direction training and education to library staff across the library system in best / promising practices in serving the Black and African American community.
  • Demonstrating behavior that is culturally aware and sensitive.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

You must demonstrate a positive attitude excellent interpersonal skills cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers co-workers and providing customer service you may encounter situations that require de-escalation or assistance from a supervisor or person-in-charge. Your ability to exercise quick and mature judgement in dealing with potentially disruptive physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial.

    Minimum Qualifications / Transferable Skills :

  • Bachelors degree in a related field or the equivalent years of experience.
  • Three (3) years of additional relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience working with the Black and African American community. This would be demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions values and customs of the community being served as well as the ability to identify specific examples of experience working directly with individuals and families who identify with the Black and African American community.
  • Ability to pass a criminal records check should a job offer be extended. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications / Transferable Skills : You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications / transferable skills to qualify. However keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.     Hybrid Telework : This position is designated as hybrid telework meaning you will be working both remotely (from home) and in person at an onsite location. The onsite location for this position is the Library Operations Center located at 221 NE 122nd Avenue Portland Oregon 97230. The designation of Hybrid Telework may be subject to change at a future time. All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington; the county cannot support ongoing telework from other locations.

However actual compensation will be determined in accordance with the Oregon Equal Pay Law and will take into account factors such as the candidates relevant experience and education.     Serving the Public Even During Disasters

    Everyday Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather natural disaster or other types of community emergency response. During these emergency responses while typically there begins with a call for volunteers county employees may ultimately be reassigned from their current position to a role in the emergency response in order to support the critical needs presented by our communities.
