Environmental Services Department at Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC)

The Environmental Services (EVS) department at Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) plays a key role in delivering exceptional patient care in a dynamic healthcare environment. ORMC is the state's only Level I Trauma Center, requiring precision, responsiveness, and collaboration from every department. The EVS team maintains a clean, safe, and healing environment with a focus on infection prevention, regulatory compliance, and service excellence, supporting 24 / 7 hospital operations in a high-acuity setting.

Position Summary

The Regulated Waste Coordinator is responsible for preparing hazardous wastes, universal wastes, and chemical wastes for shipment to disposal facilities. This includes proper packaging, labeling, placarding, and preparation of manifests / shipping documents in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulatory requirements. Ensures compliance with standards and regulations.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions

  • Maintains complete, accurate, and organized documentation records (manifests, return manifests, shipping documents) for all site hazardous, universal, and chemical waste shipments.
  • Prepares Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports to meet requirements for submission to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Supports route service for pick-up of hazardous, universal, and chemical wastes from site satellite accumulation areas and transports to site central accumulation area.
  • Consolidates wastes to minimize number of containers requiring disposal, including segregation by type and compatibility, and handling of solids and partial containers.
  • Coordinates site hazardous waste shipping schedules with contract service provider to ensure storage time limits and / or storage capacity limits are not exceeded.
  • Responds to site requests for unscheduled service needs and coordinates timely responses to prevent disruption of site operations.
  • Identifies unknown waste types by field tests, SDS research, and / or laboratory analysis.
  • Identifies waste profiles required for disposal facility acceptance of waste shipments.
  • Coordinates weekly site central accumulation area inspections and maintains records of completion date, conditions observed, number of waste containers, and corrective actions.
  • Completes all required forms and reports on time.
  • Knowledge of medical and hazardous waste regulations, health facilities, and their cleaning requirements preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse workforce.
  • Functional knowledge of infection control techniques, sanitation protocols, and cleaning methods.
  • Leads orientation and development of supervisory colleagues to ensure training and performance standards are met; completes reports accurately and on time.
  • Develops effective facility relations through formal and informal programs, verbal and written.
  • Communicates and coordinates department activities with other departments by attending and participating in medical center and regional committees (peer groups, safety, disaster, infection control, interior design, recycling committees).
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance in line with Orlando Health policies and applicable federal / state / local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Qualifications

    Education / Training

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Licensure / Certification

  • AHE certifications : CHEST preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver's license with no more than six points, age 21+, insurable under the company carrier's requirements.
  • OSHA within six months of employment.
  • DOT within ninety days of employment.
  • RCRA within six months of employment.
  • FDEP within six months of employment.
  • Experience

  • 1 year experience in hazardous waste, environmental services, safety, or related field required.
