Patient Care Technician
UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join our NICU unit. This position is full-time, rotating shift hours. Weekend and holiday coverage required. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience. Responsibilities include : assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs : bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning), supporting physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, reporting patient status changes and providing feedback to RN, performing core nursing assistant tasks : blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, intake / output, specimen collection, Foley care, completing at least four advanced tasks : phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal, applying, monitoring, and removing restraints per protocol, providing patient / family instruction under RN direction, ensuring equipment malfunctions are reported promptly, responding to call lights, phones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients, documenting care accurately in medical records, maintaining effective communication and professional relationships, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness of workplace safety, participating in self-review, seeking feedback, and identifying learning needs, supporting departmental projects, quality initiatives, and suggesting improvements, complying with all hospital policies, safety standards, and infection control, maintaining enthusiasm, accountability, and commitment to patient care, performing clerical tasks as needed, and achieving competency in advanced skills as required : phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping / removal.
High school diploma or GED required. Must meet one of the following : 1 year of general healthcare experience, 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant / CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire / transfer / promotion, enrollment in PT / OT / PA or related healthcare program with at least one clinical rotation completed, Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field, successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class, successful completion of eRecord training. EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in EMT / Paramedic program preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances : Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer. Act 33 with renewal. Act 34 with renewal. Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal. ACLS preferred.
