Summary :
The circulator nurse in the operating room plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of surgical procedures by managing non-sterile tasks and facilitating communication among team members, ultimately aiming to provide safe and efficient patient care. By effectively coordinating with the surgical team, maintaining a sterile environment, and addressing patient needs, the circulator nurse contributes to achieving the organization's objectives of delivering high-quality healthcare services, optimizing operational efficiencies, and promoting positive patient outcomes.
Responsibilities :
1. Report to Team Leader / Charge Nurse or designee for assignments
2. Prepare OR rooms for cases (e.g. supplies, linen, instruments, equipment etc.)
3. Assess the immediate pre-operative, intra and post-operative needs of the patient undergoing surgical intervention and recovery from anesthesia.
4. The perioperative RN reviews specific patient specific information relevant to the operative or invasive procedure based on the patients condition or need.
5. Maintain accurate and complete records, including counts, specimen slips and EMR documentation
6. Demonstrate careful handling and disposition of surgical specimens.
7. Participates as a member of the surgical team in the universal protocol for prevention of wrong patient, site, level surgery or procedure.
8. Provides safe, efficient , and therapeutically effective nursing care for patients within their assigned area, with particular emphasis upon practice of aseptic technique.
9. Provides break, meal and end of shift relief to staff on cases in progress.
10. Participates in unit weekday and weekend call rotation.

12. Performs other duties as required.

Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State
Current knowledge and skills appropriate to the age / type patient population served
Previous OR circulating experience, knowledge of Cerner electronic documentation

Physical Effort : Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force
